it's NOT whirling disease.

New Hampshire lake trout have this issue sometimes, i see 2% of trout caught throughout the season with that. I think 7 so far for my groups. Doesn't hurt the fish at all it's just the way some are born, no big deal.

When we won the 2006 winni derby our laker was 31" and 11 pounds and crooked, but just fine, well until i hit him in the head with a club, but up til then he was fine.

Thats a healthy fish. Seen many more like it just smaller.

regardless if this fish has whirling or not, i am ditching my felt wading shoes for non-felt. we don't want whirling here. it may be here now anyway

Wouldnt that be cool huh? I am 99.9% sure they are extinct. Anyone know as to when the last was was caught or any info on them?

The Sunapee or golden trout (a char) was also originally present in several other
New Hampshire and Maine ponds. It disappeared from Sunapee around the
middle of the 20th century and is now found only in Maine.

Why havent they tried capturing a pair and breeding them?

My two post about the Sunapee Trout are taken from the F&G web site.

The Sunapee golden trout and
other rare char competed poorly with
many other species and needed
physical barriers such as impassable
waterfalls to keep them physically
isolated. Golden trout, in addition to
being in Lake Sunapee, were also
confirmed to be in Dan Hole Pond
and were perhaps in Wachipauka
Pond in Warren and Silver Lake in
Madison. A separate rare char lived in
Dublin Lake; another in Christine
Lake in Stark. The golden trout and
whatever other rare char were once in
New Hampshire have long been gone
from the state. All were crowded out
by the introductions of other species
into their home waters.

I have an Outdoor Life Encyclopedia published in 72' that lists an 11lb 8oz 33" Sunapee trout(Salveninus Alpinus) with a 17 1/4" girth caught  August 1, 1954 on Lake Sunapee by Ernest Theoharis.  It is still nice to believe some might still exist, though I agree it is highly doubtful.

F&G assessment was that introduction of lake trout that out competed the Golden Trout?

I'd like to hear definitive answer from F&G biologist what this is. I've caught and released one myself (twisted up laker, not Golden Trout). Have a feeling it won't be the last. Good to know if it needs to removed from the lake and/or gene pool.

Oh no not this again... ;)

I would say harvest it. It is what I have been doing. Better safe than sorry is my thought. I don't enjoy lake trout, but it's protein, and it may help the fishery.

On another note I remember having a discusssion with a local of sunnappee about the golden trout/char. They caught some gigantic ones back in the day after they introduced lake trout. I believe several state records for the golden trout where set and broken up there. This gentleman said he had talked to f&g, and that the golden trout hybridized with the lake trout, and this is why they were catching such large specimens. They also speculated this aided in the decline of the golden trout in NH.

C/O NHF&G

Quote
Distribution: Lake trout are widely distributed throughout northern North America including much of Canada (with the exception of some Hudson Bay Drainages), Alaska, the Great Lakes Region, the northwestern states, and northern New England. Populations are found in several oligotrophic water bodies in New Hampshire. Native populations exist in both central and northern New Hampshire (Squam Lake, Winnipesaukee Lake, Newfound Lake, First Connecticut Lake and Second Connecticut Lake). Stocking programs have introduced self-sustaining populations of lake trout in 17 additional water bodies, increasing their distribution to include more water bodies in the central, southwestern, and northern parts of the state. The species has been introduced in other parts of the world. In parts of the western United States, their introduction has resulted in the displacement of sensitive native trout species.

Dick
I think I read in a fish and game article about it a while ago that they got to very large sizes off of the smelt in the lake. However in a few ponds in maine with bluebacks, smelt can collapse the fishery  ???
