I'd have to say my best tip is to check your bait every now and then. I can't tell you how many times I was just being lazy and hanging with buddies, then comes time to pack up and half of my tip ups are bait-less! Also, when it's cold it's real easy to keep your hands in your pockets, and your butt in the shanty. But if you have tip ups set, don't be lazy and chip them out every once in a while! It's not good for a trap to have to chip 2" of ice around it and you might lose that fish!
Quote- fishslap: I use a variety:  whistlin' bungholes, spleen splitters, whisker biscuits, honkey lighters, hoosker doos, hoosker don'ts, cherry bombs, nipsy daisers, with or without the scooter stick, or one single whistlin' kitty chaser

… buy spike grubs on line by the 1,000 real cheap – and use 2# flourocarbon, on a light fast action Quality Pole, with a halfway decent spinning reel … the rest is just fishin’ !

Don't know if it has been said but, Drill lots of hole and keep moving from hole to hole. Follow the fish. If the bite slows down just keep dropping your line down one of the predrilled holes to find the fish. Been doing this for acouple years and it pays off. Got lazy and didn't move around last year (shanty was to cozy) and didn't get as many fish jigging that i ussally get.

fishing tip-ups: check every 30-45 mins till the bite   when it starts you need to carry the minnows everywhere! because the constant shimmy as the minnow goes up, then down gets attention, even if not hungry. but they stay around for when they do get hungery, a lil before sunset usually, i will get 3-4 fish per tip-up (5 tip-ups) all in about a hour. when the tip-up action slows   thats when i get the action on the small spoons and jigs....
boss spoons, they can catch it all!!!

If your permy's not on the fish, either move it or learn to play cribbage.

If you can, practice your jigging techniques in a fish tank or bucket full of water.  It will show you how your jig is behaving.

If you can get a cheap fishfinder and a power source. I use a cheap $20 (walmart special) finder and it does awsome with detecting anything swimming. And for power I use a battery pack the kind that is used for jumping dead batteries. Been using this since last year and can't figure out how i fished wiht out one before. Sometime the fish are threre and you have to change your jigging tech. That is why the fish finder in good to have.

Keep yer piehole clamped shut about access to your favorite pond on online forums so it doesn`t become trashed by the lurkers surfing for fish reports and access spots. Let the SCABS do thier own homework or pay the consequences.

Don't just fish one spot and one lure all the time try new lures, spots, and tactics until you find a combination that works on that certain day, because every day a different combination will be the one that works the best.
A day without fishing is a day wasted.

the morning bite starts to slow as the sun gets up over the trees, the evening starts as it goes below the horizon. and most the time it goes well into dark! so pack a big lunch and dress warm, you might be out there from 6 am till 11-12 pm!
boss spoons, they can catch it all!!!

Have fun and always leave with the same amount of gear and people that you arrived with.

If the bite is light and the water has clouded up, get the camera out and go to the bottom. No perch is safe when big brother is watching.

Cover em up when not in use.... I've knicked my boots and my shanty cover learning the hard way.
luckily I didn't get skin or anything like that
