Just sit in the middle of everyone and mooch fish off their lights. Thats what i did last year. I'm not buying anything special to catch bait!

sure did!!! The only silver fish i like to catch is steelies!!!!! Plus its already been confrimed that smelt fishing is strictly a drinking hobby!!!!!!

I caught like 68 or something like that. I'm donating mine to someone this year. I cant stand at the kitchen sink and clean shiners again!

well its getting closer to that time of year again. maybe i better get my act together and get the ice fishing stuff gathered around again and gone through. im sure i got some reels that need new line, and a few jigs that need cleaning. to those who dont have a submersible light, not to worry, i got one i can loan out, just make sure ya dont forget where ya got it. guess i better start stocking up on the HOT D@MN and super schnapps too, this way there is plenty to share when the night gets cold..........nuttin like a little liquid fire to warm up an icefishermans night. LOL

also, if there is anyone that is going up alone and needs a place to fish, i got a shappell 4000 that i use by myself, so i got plenty of room for ane or two others to share my shanty if need be.

last year when i went down to higgins, smeltville was on the west side, over the underwater ridge...........and as far as parking goes, by then the ice will be so thick, ya could park a semi out on the ice..................h ell, they had trucks parked out on the ice so close together last year i thought maybe it was a parking lot LOL

Actually they leave the truck there. They ( the DNR ) just put a ticket on your window!!

I am glad to see a few new members that chose this post to start there Iceshanty life. Welcome. I'll put a little light on the subject. The first year was a weekend everyone decided on about 5 days before and we never met each other as everyone found there spots, some in a group and others just out on there own. The next day we knew we were all there by or posts but didn't meet everyone! Well last year we had everyone, pretty much, in the same location. It wasn't about catching the all mighty smelt as it was meeting eachother. This year I chose Higgens to include our northern folk and share our event with them as well. Also at higgins we can catch smelt during the day as well as at night. That's why I plan an arrival time as high noon. I am unsure if I can get prize donations this year like I did last year but I am working on it. Jammin Jigs said they are in so don't forget to check out them. This year I would like to take a step up from a door prize. I wan't to have a raffle. If I can get a top prize like last year I want to have donation tickets for each $5 donated. So you may have as many chances as you want. Now here is the best part. I am going to take all the donations and hold a "Teach a Kid to Fish Event!" next summer. I'm sure I have enough IS MI friends that would volunteer there time for this. I'm sure the news paper and our local TV station would cover this. Lansing is only our state capital(Hmmmm a little Iceshanty publicity).Any how, I would love to see the oportunity for kids to learn to catch fish. I have seen many times at this community park with the parrents bringing a child down with themselves having no idea how to fish. I want to introduce them to fishing on the right foot. I want them to enjoy it and catch fish.This is this years theme and hopefully a reoccuring one. I want to teach more kids (and there participating parents) How to fish. We have a great group of sportsman here and I believe everyone WE would all enjoy nowing that a five dollar donation will end with a kids smile! If any one reading this would like to donate to this event just PM me.
This wil be an event to remember! The Beginning of "Teach a Kid to Fish!"

Great idea mud , I have three young kids myself. Fortunately I have taught my kids how to fish whether it be soft water or hard water. But like you said so many of their friends come over and just don't have a clue about fishing and to see the kids faces when they finally catch a fish is priceless
