Glow power
« on: Dec 29, 2008, 10:54 AM »
How does everyone here power up their glow lures/jigs ???
How often do you recharge them when in use  ???
How long does a typical glow work ....seconds or minutes ???
I've used a few glow lures/jigs in the past without much success.
It seemed to me that as soon as my powered up glow jig/lure hit the water, the glow diminished almost right away  ???
Last year, I saw an infomercial about glow jigs that lit up when immersed in water.....has anyone seen or used them  ???

I use them lots for walleye, and they work good. Usually last 10 minutes of good glow but I sometimes give them up to 20 min. before I recharge, just depends on what the fish like........lots of glow, faint glow.  When its late in the day and I see fish just looking at my lure on the flasher sometimes just a quick recharge is all it takes to trigger them to bite.  I use small flashlights/my headlamp, etc, LEDs are the best, and sometimes if I've forgot to bring any lights with me  ::), I usually have my camera and I've used the flash from it a couple times............its instant and makes a really bright glow at least for a little while............the downside of the camera........have to delete lots of jig pics  :D.  Haven't tried those others you mention.

I use glo jigs all the time for walleyes. At times they work really well. I use a flasher which is actually a removeable flash from a camera. these really make the jigs glo bright and for a longer period than any led or flashlight will.Hope this helps happy fishing.

i have used those "Illuminator Jigs" that light up when under water. They have really sharp hooks but are alittle hard to feel under water. they are over sized for the weight ( 1/2 oz. size 1/4 oz. weight ). i find they are hard to feel at the end of your line on the Red. Haven't tried them on a lake yet, but hopefully in the next couple weeks i'll be able to get out somewhere.

Depends on what type of glow lure you have blue. The techni-glow ones glow alot longer than the regular glow. Even though they look like they are not glowing, they maybe as don't have to be full glow. A fish sees more than we do. I like the blue and red glow ones and find these last a long time glowing say maybe 20 mins. But the regular glow might only last a few minutes.
Burbot here don't like the lunker lights (the ones you crack then attach to your line) and didn't seem to make a difference when I put some immerse in water types. Glow seemed to work best for burbot here but mostly after glow has diminished some.
I just glow mine (both sides) with those led lights that I use as headlamp for hunting  ;)2.  I could use a fancy lazer one but find that fish here don't like the full glow as much.
Hope you get the right glow on bud :D

Rather than start a new topic, I thought I would ask under this thread - don't mean to hijack.

When do you light up your glo jigs?  During the day in murky water to make the jig more viable?  Only at night?  In clear water?

Are glo jigs (or glow lures in general) the only option for night time crappie/ walley? Do fish still react to metallic and non-glo lures which don't glow at night, or must you use a glo lure?

Thanks!

Mike

not sure if this the same type of jig, but I bought some on the weekend and they have two little metal prongs protruding out. When you place the jig in the water(or touch the two prongs together with you thumb) you complete a circuit and the jig glows red...apparently supposed to last up to 50 hours or so. Did not catch anything with this lure but I thought it was a good idea...will try again.

Did you buy this in Walmart? If so, was it heavy enough to reach the bottom of the Red?

yep bought from wallymart, it barely reached the bottom...Ifigured that it should have been heavy enough with all the gadetry inside but it is a little on the light side!

It's a bad sign about a brand when they dont state a weight.  Do you recon you could put a small pinch on weight above the jig?  Let me know if you catch anything!

I used that lure from Wal-Mart on the Red, I just tied it on a drop shot to get it down to the bottom.  The funny thing is I had one line with a glow jig and the sauger really liked it because they were only hitting that line, but as soon as I dropped the flashing Wal-Mart jig to the bottom that put an end the fishing entirely.  Then I thought about if I were to go grocery shopping and the chicken I was buying had a bright red flashing eye would I want to eat that chicken?  I think this was a classic lure catches the fisherman not the fish technique.  Dam...Caught again
Let's see...Ice shack, auger, snowmobile, rods, flasher, heater...My Walleye averages out to be $67.83 Per Lbs.
