securing hook to spool
« on: Dec 22, 2008, 03:58 PM »
What is everybodys secret in securing hook to tipup spool when you are done for the day. There is nothing more frustrating than taking your tipups out of the bag or pail and having the hooks come loose from the spool and getting tangled up with the other tip ups. The other problem is having the barb get hooked in the braided line.

I use a piece of Styrofoam for the hooks  ;)  but I'm a little stumped on securing the spool too   :-\

Rubber bands

I use cut rubber bands as depth markers and just stick the hook in the tag end sticking thru the spool at the end of the day.

+1 on the rubber bands, I just put one around the spool to secure the hook to it, works like a charm. They also sell clips that go on your spools to secure the hook.

I used to use rubber bands but they kept rotting away.

I got fancy and bought some velcro from Wal-Mart.  Cut and sewed it on a machine, took about 5 minutes to make about 12.  Then added a little grommet for the hook.  Here is a pic.

You simply put the hook in the little eye of the grommet and then wrap the velcro around the spool where it will stick to itself.

You can see them on the reels in this pic.  I have been using them for 3 years now and really like em better than any of the old ways I tried.

I just starting using the black pipe insulation tubes, cut in about 1 inch sections.  They wrap around my Beaver Dam spools and keep everything from getting tangled.

I have use the 1" wide strip of velcor the last couple of years.  Slick and easy.   6" strip works great.

I use Frabill Thermal tip-ups and there is a piece of cork glued to the bottom of the spool.  I love the Frabills

The extra spools are for quick changeouts.

For instance if I catch a fish and while getting out the hook, the hook is destroyed or the leader is damaged, I just swap the whole spool and reset.  Then I fix the problems when I am someplace warm with the use of my fingers.

Also some of them are set for different species.  I have two with steel leaders for the big fish.

I also have 6 tipups, so if I actually swap tipups first before I even go to the spools. It is overkill but some places where I catch pickerel, they destroy leaders quick.

I use  the velcro strips got them at home depot..........I stapled a piece just above the trip mechanism it prevents flags in the face while transporting and also use a piece around reel to hold line and hook. Doesn't break like a rubber band and quick storage in your pocket while setting traps.

I cut a slit in a film canister, put the hook in it, and rubber band it to the body of the tip-up. That way the hooks will not snag onto anything, and it's easy to deal with on the ice.
Ice is on the lake so we're goin' fishin'!
