Kalamazoo County Reports
« on: Dec 16, 2008, 10:08 PM »
Anyone got any ice info on Kalamazoo County Lakes? I was out on 12/15 to Austin Lake, Hogsett and Gourdneck. Austin appeared completed iced over but no one out. Hogsett was solid enough to walk out onto on the east shoreline (County Park) but the west shoreline was open water still. Gourdneck Lake was wide open.

People have been getting out on Sunset in Vicksburg for over a week now.  It's usually the first lake in the area with ice.

Ok, as of today, a few guys out on Asylum, and my borther in law has been hitting the gills out on Gravel.  I haven't seen anyone out on Sugarloaf yet (as of Sat.).

The narrows.  6" of good ice w/ a lot of snow.  Gills mostly.  Plus a walleye.

Austin Lake was snowy and slushy on top, but had about 4 or 5 inches of ice,it was hard to tell with the snow. I was there after dark and didn't walk more than forty yards from shore. I would have felt safe enough to fish it if it had been light, drilling a hole every so often and tapping along with the spud.

Stay safe everyone!

I was on Sugarloaf yesterday...see my post. Overall it is not safe yet. You can get out about 100 yds...after that the ice is only about 1 in thick.

Fished Hogsett and Sugarloaf yesterday. Sugarloaf had 6" around shore and 3" of good black ice the farther you went out. Hogsett has about 6" but only 2" are good ice. Caught some perch at Hogsett but ran small!!!

Just got back from Sugarloaf Lake.  It didn't look too good.  No ice on the shoreline and I didn't feel like jumping out to see if the ice was safe away from shore.  ;D

Took a walk-about today and here's what info I have around Portage area...
Gourdneck still has open water on north east end.
Hogsett had 4 guys on it...Ice was 2.5-3" they were on from the East (County Park side) West side amazingly the gate was open and ALOT of guys were out running their beagles. Some ding dong tried to drive onto the West side at the access and the ice was all broken up but it should freeze up again.
(People need to police this access if at all possible, I pulled 2 tires off the ice & some other miscellaneous trash thrown out. Otherwise they'll close it off)
Talked with 2 of the guys fishing and they said they had caught some smaller perch.
Sugarloaf No one fishing but it had 3-3 1/2 thick.
Hogsett and Sugarloaf both had good solid ice.

Fished the bay of Gull Lake yesterday. There is about 4 in of ice. The gills were tight lipped all day. Had two flags for pike both just over 25 inches. Saw a 35 inch pulled out. There are a few small smelt being taken at night in the bay.

The better areas of the lake still are not ready.

Sorry...been fishing alot.

Sugarloaf has about 6 inches of clear hard ice...snow has not hurt yet. I fished the last two days...getting some nice gills and the occasional big perch.

Fished Gun Lk last Saturday...a few crappie before light then just some small perch...no flags.

Fished the bay on Gull Lk  New Years day...two "just keeper" pike (but I saw a 35 inch taken)
and a lot of small gills. The rest of the lake should be good now. Smelt fishing is good just outside the bay.

Austin, Gourdneck, KZ Long Lk, Hoggset all have good ice but have not fished them....yet.

I dress in all black and usually wear an Alaska hat...see ya on the ice!!
