Need some bait tank help....
« on: Feb 13, 2010, 09:10 PM »
I was poking through the Bait Tank Section and really didn't find the info I was looking for..  I was recently given an old pepsi cooler, the type you see in the store where the sodas are on ice, wish I had a camera, it has a drain at the bottom with a shut off...  my thought is to create some sort of gravity to cycle the water without having to spend much money... the tank probably holds 20-25 gallons of water... the diameter of the drain looks like I could attach a garden hose with a hose clamp to it... do you guys have any ideas on how to cycle the water to aerate it and possibly filter it without breaking the bank, and driving 90 miles to the nearest Home Depot...  I have a local hardware store and my grandfather is a plumber and has various parts I could snag,  I'm just having a hard time visualizing it...Help..!?!

if you can get a female hose to pipe adapter then adapt the pipe thread to plastic pipe up to the size of the hosefor a pond pump or small swimming pool filter   I think Scott (billditrite) uses a pool pump

keep an eye out at your local transfer station. I see pool filters at ours all the time. Next time I see one I'll grab it for ya.

I have a pool pump and filter, my concern was the output of the drain... it is about a 3/4 diameter pipe, do you think this would be enough volume as to not burn up the pool pump?

Thanks for the offer, Snofun and Fiddlehead, might be a little hard for me at the present moment to get to you guys, I'm up in Patten...

I don't think it will burn your pump out. 3/4 should be fine.

i think that most small pond/pool pumps are centrifugal pumps and restricting the flow actually make motor work less. Ask gramps , he would know.

thanks for the help guys... got it all rigged up today, and found out the pool pump is a little much for the tank...  had the shiners swimming for their lives for a little bit...  started to create a whirlpool there was so much suction from the pump...  tried to close the valve to limit the flow, everytime I did the pump would lose it's prime and stop pumping... so guess I'm gonna go search my parent's storage unit for a aquarium filter they have, question is, is how buried is it....  Thanks again....
