Little help on Mille Lacs
« on: Dec 15, 2008, 08:19 PM »
I'm going to be coming up to Mille Lacs the day after xmas with my two sons. I would like to tip-up fish for northerns during day and probably jig for walleye early and late in the day. I have never fished Mille Lacs and after looking at the hot spots on my gps I would like to narrow it down. The bays on the southern end look awful inviting, but since we only have a few days I would like to put my kids into some nice fish. Any tips on locations and or presentations that might be productive for us would be greatly appreciated. My boys are so excited about this trip and have seen Mille lacs featured on many fishing programs, so the pressures on good old dad to produce. Thanks

I have two suggestions for Northerns.  Try the outer weed edge on the south side of Wigwam bay.  I don't have the GPS coordinates, but if you look on a map you'll see that Shah-bush-kung Point has a knuckle on the north side about 2/3rds out to the pt.  If you draw a line from that across the bay it should parallel the shore line north of the bay.  The line should be heading NNW.  Head along that line until you hit the outer weed edge.     There is also a hole in the midst of the weeds on Vineland bay.  That will be good for northerns as well.  Again, I don't have coordinates and unfortunately, it's a pretty small area so it will be hard to find.  Try asking at one of the bait shops.  They are usually very helpful. Also, be careful.  The ice on ML is tricky.  Lot's of pressure ridges and other big lake issues.
Good luck and let us know how you do.

Isle bay has always been one of my favorite places for pike. The reefs on the south side are always a good spot to start looking for eyes.
