Lake Winnipeg Wed
« on: Dec 10, 2008, 09:11 PM »
Drove out of Warner road fished before the Sal. channel.   12"-14" of ice.  Fished 3 hours not a bite...........  First "skunk" in 3 years.

Snow and blowing snow.  I believe Chalet beach road got cleaned out. and the ice ridge flattened out.  With the snow today it will be plugged again.

East wind today and heavy overcast. Low pressure systems have a big effect on the big lakes.. still a bad day fishing is better than a good... well you know! Thanks for the report LeeMB.

Low pressure????? Just checked.....hasn't been any real drastic drop or rise in the last 24 hours; started at 102.62 last night & then only variance was 101.07-101.92

Where do you find those pressure numbers and what number is "normal" or "stable"  ???
I usually just look at which way the arrow next to the number is pointing.......call me dumb.....but willing to learn  ;D

I have always found fishing to be the hottest just as a weather system is moving in, that is when the pressure starts to drop a bit the fish turn on. Some of my most memorable ice fishing adventures have been just ahead of a major storm. A gradual clearing and incoming "fair" weather can take hours or days to put fish back into an aggressive feeding mode. The same goes for deer, ducks or whatever...I think!

Hey blue, not dumb at all. I'm still learning too when it comes to air pressure & how it affects fish & even how it affects different species. Basically highs get in the upper 102's & 98's are about as low as it can get. What I've found & also learned from others is that a drastic, quick drop in air pressure REALLY turns the fish off; not sure if the drastic increases do the same. Learned that 1st hand too last years at Buffalo Bay. A day and a half before we get there guys couldn't keep them off. But the night before we got there pressure dropped from high 101 to in the 98's & just like that the wicked bite was off.
Maybe someone that knows a bit more about air pressure can add some more info but I think that's the basics.
Here's the 2 links I use. If you check under "last 24 hours" you will also see what the air pressure did. For Enviro Can the past 24 hours is under 'more info' attached to the current conditions. The weather network one is also handy as they give the wind days ahead of time and Enviro Canada doesn't.

Hope that helps,

Low pressure has never really been that bad to me. Its the high pressure systems that really have turned the fish off. Regardless, a changing pressure system is always best.

Hmmm, wonder why it put my whole post in a quote instead of what I had quoted?

If you have some time on your hands and want to take a look at what the weather was like on your past 'good' days of fishing, check this site out.

WOW.. :o :o :o thanks BoSmith.....using my fishing logbook and the wunderground data I could track all my "good" fish days and indeed they were happening when the pressures were dropping.
Wind direction didn't seem to matter.........which I depended on (east winds = poor fishing in our parts).
You're right.....I did waste way too much time on there  ;D
Just wish you could get accurate barometer readings a few days in advance. Hindsight doesn't work for me......I need to have future predictions  :)
I own a sailor's barometer but it is very difficult to decipher it.  :(
