Four-mile lake
« on: Dec 05, 2008, 04:41 PM »
Has anyone heard if there is safe ice(3-4 inches)? Would like to go Sunday Dec. 7, but if not, next weekend it should be safe enough. Its pretty shallow so I thought it might lock up earlier.

I would assume its a go I am in Jackson county now but used to fish it a lot and was always the first to freeze.  If the lake dont look good make a left on the trail/road jsut before the baot launch area and head back to the marl pits it freezes quicker.  I have been fishing for two weeks now in Jackson county grass and gillets are safe.

Okay, thanks a lot. What kind of fish are in the Marl Pits? Four-Mile is the only lake I have fished in that area.

Its part of four mile lake, I think its the spring to it actually.  Old limestone quary, there is a channel strait to the big lake.  O yea its got the same fish but a good chance at much bigger pike.  Stay away from the the spring area you will see it if you walk by it its a river mouth.  I would fish in the second finger of it.

Kenny,

I see your from my neck of the woods.  I'm thinking about heading that way Sunday if the rain holds off.  Unfortunately I won't be able to make it Saturday.

Thanks Kenny.  I will be looking for somewhere to fish Sunday that the ice will hold up to the warm temps.

We headed to Vineyard and Little Stoney instead of 4 mile. Ice was fine @ 4+". Fishing was rather slow, picked up a few perch and a gill on Stoney. Did not see any fish at Vineyard. Did not notice many fish being iced. Heading to 4 mile first thing tomorrow morning, hoping the warm front will turn them on.

Fished four mile today from 7:45 am to 2:45 pm. There was about 6 inches of ice total with 2 inches of white ice on top. We caught hundreds of 3 to 5 inch gills with not one keeper. We did see some very niced sized gills that we could not get to bite. Also 2 crappies one 11 inch and one 6 inch, and also a 3 inch perch. Seen tons of pike ( mainly 20 inches) cruisin the weed beds. Didnt catch any because we didnt have minnows, but did have two break offs on small gill jigs. On the walk back there was about an inch of water on the ice from the rain, which made for hard walking.

Also seen guys on the Marl pits jiggin with tipups set up also, didnt ask how they were doing.

Thanks for the report Kenny.  We ended up fishing North lake in Gregory Michigan instead.  Only the cove by the ramp was decent ice.  We had 4 good inches, and 1 inch of white ice on top.  Slick on the way in.

Didn't mark many.  The report and photo is at the link above.  I heard the lake had some huge gills, but we never find the big ones..

Does your flasher help you catch more fish? We dont have a flasher and usually sight fish in the shanty, but if the waters too deep to sight fish or we want to be mobile and fish outside, we are practically fishing blind and just guessing.

Also, I've been on that website a couple times before and it seems really nice, I'll probably join that one too.

I can't fish without that flasher anymore.  I don't use when sight fishing in a shanty, but often the water can be cloudy, low light conditions, or deep water as you described.  The biggest advantage is not pulling your bait away from the fish when it's about to take it.  You know when to work it more to entice a bite, or even how to work it on a particular day to get them to bite.  I would venture to say other than the rod, reel, and line it's the most important piece of ice equipment I have.  Worth saving up for.  They are quite expensive, but you don't need a expensive one to get the same results.  Check Craigslist or Ebay for good deals on used ones.

The link above is the message board of my site that I've running for the last 9 years.  Good people and friendly atmosphere.  It pales in comparison to this site during ice fishing season.  This is certainly the best ice fishing information site on the web.
