Taggin yer minnow trapz
« on: Mar 31, 2009, 12:39 PM »
Was wondering what yall use to afix yer name /address to your traps b4 ya sink em as required by law here in NH. There really is no room to permanent marker on the wire mesh minnow traps themselves. Avid icefisherman and lookin to cut costs. Live a 1/4 mile from the river, figured it would be good exercise at 4-6 times a week. I`m gonna tie 2 camoed traps together with a 10 foot camo rope and use a fiberglass extension pole with a hook on the end to set and retrieve traps stealth-like. After reading the horror stories of stolen and plundered traps, outta site = outta mind.  Also , do you think painting the standard mesh traps would be a good idea or better not to screw with paint etc?   Thanks for your ideas.

I put my ID on the stick/board that I wrap the twine on, not on the trap itself. Either way, it's attached/legal and identifiable and the warden doesn't need to pull each of them to see who owns them.

My first initial, last name and a telephone number, that's it. He has the power to figure out the rest.

My traps have been stolen in the past too. I have only done it open water in streams and on shorelines so far. I now leave them no more than about an hour. I drop them, go get a bite to eat or similar, then go back and pull them. Sometimes they need a second set but I like streams where you can pull ehh, ~6 dozen with two traps in a half hour and then skidaddle to your fishing spot.

If you have a good setup (tanks, aeration) and trap in the fall, you can be all set for the winter for most bait except smelts. Those, I usually just swallow my pride and pay what the going rate is for that particular year...

Because of the jerks messing with my traps,,,I have put my name on 12ga. slug casings and hung them in my traps. I hope they get the message. Plus I think they attract the fish. I put a trap in this morning and checked an hour later and it already had bait in it.
If fishing was work I'd never be sick!

This is just my opinion guys...but putting your name on your traps will do nothing but allow the thieves to know who you are and where you live and who they are stealing from.  Lets put it this way....A thief is a thief....there will be no deterent just because your name is on the trap.  Some Azzhole will do it regardless....I'd say the best bet is to hide them well.  If they are silver...paint them black...if you have a white rope...use a camo rope.  Try to be as inconspicuous as possible I'd say when putting them out.

NH state law requires us to have our name and address on each trap.Everybody knows me where I`m from-my name is the deterent.

If thats the law...then I'd surely follow that.  If everyone knows your name....then you have no worries then.

Das,

If you want, I can make you laminated, sealed tags. Then just zip tie them to your traps. Free and I can mail them tomorrow.

I put a business card in a small ziplock bag and put the whole thing in the trap.  I also tag the shore end of the anchor rope so a warden doesn't need to disturb the traps to check who owns them.  I also write the date on that tag because Maine law requires bait traps and holding pens to be checked every 7 days.   Two wardens have thanked me for this because it makes their jobs a little easier.

Look on-line at one of the animal trapping supply stores. They have to mark there traps too. they sell either aluminum or zinc tags made for the purpose that you use a pen and write your info on. the ink doesn't stick but it indents the tags sort of like a dog-tag. they are made to last too. or you can order tags with your info stamped on them. If you had a lot to do it might be worth buying a sheet of aluminum and a metal stamp kit. but you would have to do a lot to recoup the initial investment. Finally you could buy a vibrating engraver for $20-$30 and engrave the info on one of the trap bands then you have the engraver and can go crazy engraving everything you own (no pets though). And if you ever find one of those trap thieves kick them one extra time for me!!!! They are ALL P.O.S.'s!!! >:(

We are required to have name and address also.  I use the same copper tags on my minnow traps as for my animal traps and have them made locally at a trapping supply place.
