Cordless Drill Adapters?
« on: Jan 25, 2004, 08:54 AM »
While searching around on eBay, I came across this adapter that allows you to power your hand auger with an ordinary cordless drill. The seller claimed that with a 6" auger and a 14.4V DeWalt, he drilled 22 hole through 24" of ice with one battery pack.
Being a machinist by trade, I decided to build a similar adapter. Using my 8" Eskimo auger and a 19.2V Craftsman drill, I was thoroughly disappointed with the results. I only managed to drill 2 holes through about 14" of ice, & my drill smelled like it was on fire! :(
Has anyone else had any experience with these adapters? Is an 8" auger just too big? Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

I have not used these adapters personally but I wrote to the guy that sells them and he said because of the amount of power the drill needs for bigger holes that you can only use the 6" or smaller augers otherwise you will just burn out the drill.Hope that helps!!!

I have ordered one of these, tried it out with a 14.4 volt drill and a 6" Mora. The results were not good. The drill could not even power through an inch of ice! it drilled for a quick second than just died. My drill was at its max torque setting and the drill was fully charged along with new blades for my auger. It still did not work. I was very disappointed. To be quite honest with you you get what you pay for and a 6" hand auger with new blades is not a chore to cut through several holes of ice, even when it is very thick. Just my .02

I have one, started using it this year. I love it!!! I use a 5" lazer with an 18volt Rigid, and it simply amazes me, and anyone around. I have to give demo's.
We have not had the best of ice here in southern Michigan, the thickest ice so far has been 8" for me. I used it yesterday atleast a coudle dozen holes, and i didn't change batteries.
You CANNOT let your batteries get extremely cold, they will lose charge very fast. And you MUST be in your low gear.
I do not sell these things, this is my honest experience! Get one.
They chew through ice very fast. I might get a 4" lazer, for when i'm strictly perch hunting.

Also, i think Using a lazer has alot to do with my positive experience.

Well I may have to finally get mine out from last year. Heres the deal you simple have to use the auger the way thay are designed spinning the blades not leaning on the things. If your going through 6 or more inches it helps to lift the auger out to clear chips. I imagine anyone who has trouble with the adaptor is rough on the auger hand cranking. Last year we had the fish cornered so mostly it was cut a few holes through 16 inch ice and fish. Still hven't found them this year.

Thanks for the feedback fellas,
I think my 8" auger is just too much. I tried babying it, but it seemed that the auger was kinda feeding itself, taking too big a bite. I'll have to downsize to a six incher.
Has anyone used one of the new Strikemaster 12V electric augers?

I have the electric auger and I love it. Some of you guys who drill 30 or more holes would want to use the aux. power 'four wheeler or motor cycle bat' the gell cel is good for 30 holes they say. I haven't drilled that many holes yet but have had no problems so far. the thing I like about it is that it is quiet. it is only as noisey as a hand auger, I have seen fish scatter from a gas auger from 40 yards away, made myself a promise I wouldn't own one . but I'm getting older (LOL) and this is the next best thing to doing it by hand .It really rips through the ice too.

even if you could find one with the power, i doubt the gearbox would hold up long! id bet they are proably working on a cordless one rite now at jiffy or strikemaster though. with the batters getting stronger and stronger all the time its just a matter of time. :)
