SPUDS?
« on: Nov 30, 2008, 05:56 PM »
OK everybody, let me know the tool of choice to check for safe ice while walking on out.  Big spud bar, 3' chisel, etc.  Inquiring minds want to know!

Anything with a long handle that can chop thru the ice so you can check the thickness.
If it goes thru in 2 or 3 chops!! BACK OFF "SLOWLY" THE WAY YOU CAME!!!!!!!!!!!! :o :o :o

Home made spuds made from conduit and a piece of a leaf spring!! They work well, light weight and simple.

I just ordered this one:

I like the adjustable length.  I'll let you know how it is once I receive it.

Looks cool.  I hope it works for you.  Most spuds do a good job if ya keep em semi-sharp.

I bought the Jiffy Miliacks or however you spell it   I use it all the time  even when there is 3' of ice   Much easier to use on the ice to help me walk than my cane!

I use a good ole spud bar for checking the ice. The head of mine consists of three 9/16" allen wrenches fanned out and welded to a piece of rectangular stock. The wrenches were then ground down at an angle to make a cutting edge. Then the head was welded to a solid shaft thats inserted into a piece of black pipe(handle) and welded. On the end of the handle i threaded the black pipe and screwed a "T"  pipe fitting to the handle. I then put a rope through it for a wirst strap. Its not too heavy and not too light. Nice moderate weight and it cuts great.
Get your MOJO rising.

I use a speedy spud i bought at the bait shop by selfridge air base( new baltimore , lk.st.clair) its the only spud i'll have and it flies through the ice . Bar none I have not ran into a better spud in 20 years. I have also only found these In the lk. st. clair area but can be purchased for around forty bucks. Money well spent.
So far behind i think i'm first !!!
