Storm Lake Ice?
« on: Dec 04, 2008, 09:19 AM »
Was hoping the marina would be frozen and fishable this Sunday.  Temps should be favorable between now and then, but never seem to find an ice report on that lake.  Anyone been out there or going out in the next day or two, please PM me or post the conditions.

Thanks

Most area lakes and pits have been locked up for a good week.  With the temps at 5 above right now and beings it didnt make it above 15 today im sure there will be fishable ice.

Be careful, there is an aerator in the Marina. It is to protect the new docks there.

I saw that tournament on our schedule tonight. I don't think that we will be there.  Does your boy wrestle any other tournaments around there?

Boy this silence is reassuring. Do we need to do Rock Paper Scissors? I was hoping to make it over there next Friday. Boat or Shack?

After a 2 1/2 hour drive, we found the marina wide open.  Knew they had aerators, didn't know they would keep it that open.

With no clue of were to fish the main lake, and parts of it not looking the best, we just ended up fishing in the middle of nowhere after 25 holes revealed the same exact blank 8 ft mud bottom.  Fishing was slow, but on the board for the year.

FYI was 5-6 everywhere we drilled.  We were on the East side along that park.  Did end up seeing two other shacks, both in the southeast corner??

You're on the board for you've fished, or you caught something?    I don't know if you tried calling the bait shop before leaving, but Binning Outdoors would probably be able to give you reports for you future trips to the area.  Sorry to hear about the trip.

On the board for catching fish (and fishing i guess).

Only thing I don't like about relying on bait shops in the early season, too many of them don't tell you the ice is OK until its 8+ inches and there have been shacks out for two weeks.  Probably should have called anyway, but.....    I mainly took the fact that nobody posted anything on this board or other IA boards about Storm Lake marina not being fishable.  Many people saying they were going, but never any word after their trips.

Either way, got to fish.  Had I know it would have been the main lake I would have prepared better with the GPS, countour maps, etc.  Ended up fishing sorta blind, but it was good to wet a line.  Now if that ice will just get a bit further south.........

I would have to agree with you on the bait shop reports, but thought they may be able to tell you about the marina.  I agree with the no reports etc.  I was actually thinking about going to Storm lake yesterday or Clear.  I'll be reporting on my findings in a new topic.  Hope you get some ice down south.

Thanks for the report. I have plans on being there this Friday if they still have ice. You say the SE corner is the place to go? What about the north shore, anything there?

I was starting to think that you had to agree to a code of silence to fish Storm Lake.

Not sure about the north shore, but would imagine it is OK.  We came in town from the south, tried every wrong possibility to find the marina on the south side, and then upon that disappointment we were headed by the west side of the lake to town and saw one hut out on the ice, so we parked it there.  There was open water around the/a island, but not alot.  The south shore seems to have some ice piled up on it from the wind, but still looked good (we didn't walk out on it or drill).  From a distance it appeared there were some decent heaves out toward the middle, but that was just a blind eye look from a long ways away.

Sorry I don't have more info, have only fished the lake twice now and don't really know it at all.  But yeah, it seems hush hush about this lake, us Nebraskans don't have to follow the code of silence though!!!!

Hey, thanks.

I talked to the guy that I had plans with and he said that there was still some good sized holes out in the middle that were open. We are planning just bypassing Storm for this trip and heading to the Lakes. Since you are not swarn to secrecy, I will have to just ask you in the future.
