I dont get it...
« on: Oct 13, 2007, 09:31 AM »
I see people keep referring to scooping ice out of the hole w/ your gloves... why would do this? I just don't understand why you'd stick your hand in the water when you can buy a perfectly good scoop for $2. I don't think there are many gloves that are going to be made for this - grabbing fish yes... but scooping ice seems kinda unnecessary - maybe its just me - but i don't want to stick my hand in the ice. (We average 20-30 below w/ the wind in the dead of winter.)

Thats kinda what i was thinking :) - the specific post was the Review for the IceArmor gloves - they're nice gloves but people don't like them because they turn into blocks of ice when you scoop out holes (there are other reasons too - but this is the silly one i saw - and i don't mind them but I'll stick to my good old leather gloves) - unless you have a pair of heated gloves they're all going to chunk up with ice if your going to be dipping your hand in the water... i don't know why this bothers me so much ;) but its like saying that the Carhart bibs didn't keep me warm when i jumped into the water.  :o  :D

Yeah it is kinda foolish, but part of the sales pitch was to be able to dip your hand right in the water.   I have seen sales video where they are using gloves and putting their hand in the water to test ice thickness and to clean holes.

I own a pair and they work pretty well, but I do bring another couple pairs of gloves just in case.

Well mine get used for cleaning out  tip up holes after a flag instead of running back and forth to the shack or trailer.

I got a pair of Neoprene gloves last year. I thought they would be water tight. But they let water in at the stitches.

I mainly use a pair of HT Glove/Mitts. The tips are mittens that can be held back by a set of magnets and have a pocket for a handwarmer. The thumb has a separate tip that flips back also. I can't find them anymore. I like having access to my fingers for tying jigs and un-hooking fish. But they are 2 years old and the stitching on the glove parts has started to come out.

the only time i stick my hand in the hole is when im trying to get a fish that spit the hook out and is just sitting in the hole , daring me to grab him...i say naaaah ill just get a wet sleeve. so the fish just stays there until you commit to the shoulder deep plunge and lets you run your wet hand down his back as he swims away and once again ...wet sleeve...to the shoulder. fiddlehead is the quickest draw in the northeast however...ive seen him go for the wet sleeve and come up fishy!!

I'm with you Pete.  I also use foam hole covers on my tipups to keep anything out of the holes.  This way, I don't have to scoop my holes all day or get my hands cold after a fish.

My son and I were fishing one day when he decided to deep 6 the dipper. It was very cold and I didn't want to dip the holes by hand so I asked one of my shanty neighbors if I could use his. He didn't have a dipper, but he showed be how do get the slush out with my boot. He just stuck the toe of his very large lacrosse boot in the hole and pumped it in and out three or four times. This action drew water out of the hole and out onto the surface of the ice leaving very Little slush in the hole. It to me a few tries to master the technique, but now I use it every time a dipper isn't handy.

Homemade dipper:  Need a small empty coffee can, duct tape, and paint stirring stick, + electric drill and bit.  Drill the holes and do the math.  If you dont drill holes its good for keeping fresh water in your bucket too, scoop out the old, scoop in the new .

I had a pair of neoprene one too. They had the same problem but not too bad till I tried to lip grab an 18 pound northern.  Bad move!  Luckily my hand slipped out of the glove.  I only suffered a few scratches and some off hand jokes by my fishing buddies.  On the bright side, the fish didn't get away!

I had a little incident with not cleaning a hole like I should.  Pretty cold day of -17 below (F) and got busy talking to someone else fishing close. The conversation went on for quite awhile and it ended quickly when I had a flag go up. Went to the hole in a hurry and the T-bar was spinning almost to a blur. I went to pull the tip up and it would not come loose from the hole. I had about 3/4" of ice to bust through. It took the heel of my boot punching the hole (or lack there of  ::) ) to get the tip up loose. By this time the T-bar had stopped at a sudden jerk, as alas, I was out of line.     Lost the fish and busted the frame on my polar trying to get it out. >:(

I guess the moral of the story is no matter how your clean your holes, ( i.e.   Gloves, ladel, minnow net, or the now famous boot trick Thanks Skipper) you just have to do it on a regular basis.    I know I clean mine about every 1/2hr and on really cold days I do not put any out, sit in my portable and jig away warm and happy.

I know this strays from the glove thing, but who cares....    bring on the ice as I am going crazy just thinking about it.

Sven
