Windlass Tip-Up Lines
« on: Nov 06, 2008, 07:44 AM »
I have decided to give the windlass tip-up another shot this season and in hopes of improving my success, I thought I would see what everyone out there uses for line on this style tip-up. In the past I filled the spool with fireline ice...but was not happy with the performance...do you guys use regulat tip-up line on the spool with a leader, or do you use a normal diamater line

Been using braided on mine from Day 1.However i will only use the windlass if conditions permit.Always late in the season when milder temps will not cause the hole to freeze.Wicked pike catching set up.

I put some of the thinnest vinyl coated tipup line I could get (25lb. I think) on both my Windlass tipups. I used them several times last year and they worked well. I always use a mono or fluro leader on all my tipups. Sometimes I'll use fireline crystal as a leader because the pickeral don't bite through it as quick.

i have been using the backing that came with my low boys and at the end of them i put some green mono on for a leader. i like to use Andy monofillament in the 8 to 10 lb. test range and also i prefer the green line.when i put a leader on, i make it about ten feet long.

50 lb tufline XP or 50 lb Western filament braided dacron is what i have on all 4 of mine. 2 of each. the tufline XP is better on this particular tip up because its thin and it is a solid braid not like the hollow dacron. since the spool sits out of the hole the dacron ices up. when the line ices up you run it through your fingers and its good to go though so its no real problem at all. Also i put my windlasses on super free spool so the line just pays off by itself. I use the line that was supplied with the tip up as backing on both so i dont have to put as much on them to fill the spools. Saying that i still have about 250 feet of 50 LB tufline on 2 (each) and about 200 feet of 50 lb dacron (each). They are awesome when theres wind and if there isnt wind i still use them, its like watching a bobber go down when you see the arm go down on a calm day. These are always producers for me. I use slater style jigs with them and have loads of success

OK guys, I bought one of these late last year and had one outing with it and am not sure if I had it set up right. Should this be set into the wind or with the back to the wind? How about the spring(s) setting? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

i let the wind blow pushing the flag shaft into the spools pole so that the wind doesn"t trip the flag.

ive never had wind trips but i like to put mine so the wind pushes down on the silver paddle. This way if the wind blows really hard it will blow the paddle down and not flip it backwards if you put it facing into the wind. the tip up is like people, butt end to the wind.

I use regular tip up line.  Summer braid seams to absorb a little water and freezes up a lot easier and with the spool above the water, it makes a huge difference.
