Help with an old ESKA-MO auger
« on: Dec 06, 2008, 07:43 AM »
Hi guys, I was given a 35 year old Eska-mo auger and it runs. My question is; there is a plug just above the blade where oil goes. Does anyone know what oil belongs in there. I would guess that's the gear box... Also, is there any way of still getting parts for this relic.   Thanks, Tom

Hey!! welcome to the Shanty Grandfather.
ebay might be Your best bet when it comes time to get parts for that and a google search would probably get You some info on it too.
You might want to check in the "equipment"section of the forums of the shanty, there might be some info listed in there too. :)

You might have a hard time getting parts for the older Eskimo augers. WE had one and I actually replaced it last year with a new Eskimo auger. The old one we had was starting to show it's age. The drive grea broke from the clutch drum and we had to have the piece welded back together as we couldn't get a replacement part.  Best of luck finding parts. But if you can get parts it should run forever. Our old one still runs. But the new ones runs much better.

Usually a safe bet with gearboxes is a "Hypoid" gear oil available from most autoparts stores, personally I would go with a full synthetic in a lower weight (usually 70w-80w) since it's going to be used in winter temps. Cheaper lube will tend to thicken up in the cold and can rob power. If it's looking pretty black and smelly when you drain the old stuff, try flushing the residue out with some fresh fluid before you fill it up for good. Hope this helps!
A bad day of fishing beats anything else I'd be doing today.....
