Looking for lead!!
« on: Mar 07, 2008, 01:09 PM »
Anyone have any connections for lead? I'm pouring my own sinkers and jigs for my charter season. I've been hitting up my local tire shops for their old tire weights and have been getting a bit here and there. If you know of any plumbers, contractors, mechanics, etc. I am willing to pay cash or trade for store credit here at the tackle shop  ;D

You might try the local truck stops , they have nice big tire weights .
That's were I used to go when I made my own egg sinkers .

Go direct to the scrapyards. Continental Scrap in Wolcott is a good source.  203-879-4673. It is cheaper to sell it local that to ship it to New Haven or Waterbury.
The U.S sends it to China on the cheap and we pay for the finished goods at a premium. Just like the Japanese in WWII sending us the planes with bombs back from our scrap.

Buying from a scrap yard is my last resort but I may be heading in that direction soon. I've found prices so far ranging from $.40 - $.65 per lb.

I have an unlimited supply of striper fillets for anyone interested in trading ;)

How much are you looking for??? I'm a plumber by trade and have a fair amount on hand to take care of my needs. I pour some of my own and picked up a mold for an 8# fish weight for downrigging. Send me a PM and go from there.

I use BIG lead in my charters... 12-16 sinkers on most days, some days we can get away with 8-10's. I also make my own diamond jigs, these range from 12-20 oz each.  :o

Check out anyone who may be doing replacement windows. Many of the old double hung windows used lead instead of steel as counterweight for the windows  The sash weights are housed in the sides of the double hung windows. They usually leave them in when doing  "housed" replacements, but if they are replacing the whole window, I'm sure they'll give ya the weights for free. We use them to melt & make weights for our decoys. They are a more pliable lead content than Tire weight. Ask some old carpenters,at a "local", they may be able to help.

Doggonit, I hope there isn't any waterfowl hunters near me that read this....

I have a couple of contractors keeping their eyes open for sash weights. A couple more weeks and my shop will be too busy with sales to pour lead and I will start stocking up for next season. I hope to have at least a 1,000 lbs stored by next winter ;D

Still looking... Scrap prices are down considerably over the last month so I may just buy from the ayrds but if anyone has any that they'd like to part with, I'll pay you what the yards are paying. Your choice of cash or store credit  ;)
