Shanty with wheels.
« on: Dec 24, 2006, 01:25 PM »
I am planning on buying a shanty on wheels that will lower down to the ice in the spring. What bothers me is that we don't have any snow here yet and it has been warm for a few weeks. We still have 14" of ice on some of the lakes, but I don't know how long it will remain good ice. With these warm winters I wonder if buying one of these would even make sense. What do ya think??  ???

Well I will tell yah what my GIRLFRIEND told me when I was looking at a 7500$ shack last summer. "You could use it year round, summer time it would make a nice little camper and storage shed." Get one with a rear door big enough to get an ATV into and it will be very versitile.

I'm going for a V front with an ATV door in the back and a door in the V.

I'd say get it Bob.  I think we'll have plenty of good ice for a long time up North until spring.  I know the daytime temps have been creeping into the mid 30's but the overnights have still been dipping into mid to low 20's and high teens from what I read on the weather sites.  Not to mention that, but winter is technically just getting started as of several days ago :).  We'll get some snow cover on the ground soon enough, then it'll be back to BRR it's cold out :).

Just my $.02 bud...

I've thought about these also.  Here in Michigan, we have no ice.  It will be several more weeks before we can drive a 4 X 4 truck on the ice., if we can at all this year.  My thought is I'm more able to get out with my portable and Polaris Sportsman.  Sure would be nice fishing from one though.
I enjoy that perfect peace -- that peace beyond all understanding, which comes at it's maximum, only to the man who has given up golf.

I have been going with my ATV and portable. We have 14" of good ice and I will probably be switching to my hardside shortly. There were people driving all over the lake with pickups last time I was there, but the ice was making too many cracking sounds for me to trust it so we used the ATV and portable. I would feel really stupid if my truck went through the ice while towing an ATV on a trailer.  ::) :D

I should be taking delivery of my new ice house on wheels in a few days. 6 1/2' x 12' and fiberglass inside and outside. Six holes with catch covers, 12 V lights, storage box with bunk up front, double doors in back for ATV and 15k btu Empire direct vent heater. I'm gettin kinda wound up to fish out of it.  ;)

They are boxy looking, but they are well built and they claim you can just about heat them with a propane lantern. They are a sideline for this company and he has his guys build these in the slow season to keep from laying them off. I'll support someone like that any time.   ;D

Did you happen to catch the price on the 16 footer? Pretty nice, I kinda like the idea that it is  kinda plain, can personalize it that way.

Stumper, The 16 foot runs $3,495 to $4,295. I think they are very reasonable compared to most of them. The local Ice Castle dealer here wanted $6,200 for a 12 foot with 4 holes, ATV door, Carpet, paneling and 12 volt lights. What cracked me up was when he said $500 more if I wanted it insulated. I wasn't planning on fishing in Death Valley with it. lol :woot: :cookoo: ;D

That sounds very reasonable, let me know how well it pulls. I was thinking about buying an enclosed trailer and this might just be the ticket.

I asked him about how it pulls and he said he pulls it with his F150 5.4 liter. According to him, it pulls about like his 17' boat. I think the V fronts pull easier, but a 12 footer with a V front is actually about 16' long. I see people trying to sell their V fronts because of them being too heavy for their ATVs. I pull with A Super Duty V10 and not much bothers it. I bought it delivered to SD and he is supposed to be coming here to do some ice fishing. I will get it from him then and let you know how it pulls when I get it home.

I'll get some pictures when I get back on the ice. I can't get the heater put in until next week though. The wind was blowing at least 25 from the SE today and you could tell that you had something behind the truck due to the gusting. My son was driving on the way home and he said it pulled as easy as our 14" lund does. The guy that brought it to SD said that it was  ;Dwindy as heck and gusting and he was doing 80 mph at times on the interstate. I seems to be well built and all of the framework is actually glassed to the outside skin. I would say it was a heck of a deal for the money. Now we will have to wire in some speakers and computer fans, get the AMFM put in and go fishing.

Lone Fisher, ya got yer butt planted on a lake yet. We got a bit of ice here and then it had to snow and screw things up. Last year we got about 5" of ice and then a foot of snow. Things were screwed up for quite a while.
