End of Another Great Season!
« on: Mar 17, 2008, 02:20 PM »
My season is over and I had a great time.  Got to fish with my 79 year old dad who out-fished me last trip. Also got the son home from college and had a great time.

Here is a rough estimation of my season:
Trips: around 10
Fish Caught:  150 estimated!
Species: mostly gills, one great crappie trip and a few bonus perch.

A pretty typical season for me, a few limits, a few slow days, but always had fun.  I got to thinking about all the fish I have caught in about 50 years!  Glad Dad took me with him many years ago.

Glad I found this site, a lot of fun and even an old dog can learn a few new tricks!  Thanks to all!
Next event, gills with a bubble and fly...., Walleyes & steelies in the river..., Turkeys?

I must agree that sounds like a good season. I aquired all of my ice fishing gear this year and didnt get out to much.
Total trips - 8
Total fish - 30
Fish - Perch baby!

I also agree next even being Steelhead in the river and turkey (going to actually try this year). And open water fishing is right around the Corner come on giant bass.

I really don't know how many fish I caught this season, but there were a very nice number of perch . . . many of them jumbos. I would like to have done better on walleye, but I will begin my open-water pursuit of walleyes in a couple of weeks (we can get an early start on Lake Huron). I just got back from a vacation to Greece last night about midnight and have already used my ice fishing spud to chip away the ice preventing the door to my storage barn from opening. I gave my boat a nice pat and told it we would be back in action very soon. I may get out again yet this year for some ice fishing, but not being able to target walleye takes away some of the fun.
I am blessed to live in an area where the fishing is great and the people are nice!

Anytime I can be on the ice and know everything is done at home is a fantastic day ice fishing, the best time I had this year I was by myself, had 10 gills on the ice then they quit, so I broke out the stereo headphones and tuned in a oldie station, 98.7, from there I heard some songs I haven't heard in years, one Mrs Brown You Have A Lovely Daughter, I had to stand up in my portable shanty and start dancing, when I did I landed 3 more gills!, seemed like everytime I stood up and jigged to a tune I caught fish, go figure, walked off with my second limit of the year!

I am blessed to live within 10-20 minutes of 3 lake chains and I can be out on the ice catching fish and then back at home in enough time to salvage my marrage and work.
Some other notes for this year.
Times I P'd off my wife while fishing: 20ish
Times I really P'd of my wife while fishing: 2 Exactly
Times I was able to take kids or newbies out: 6 (need to do better at that)
Things I want to do next year: keep a journal with temp, wind, lunar and other inoformation.  Get a pole and winter gear for my new son that will be here in march so he can get an early start ;D

NICE!! After my Girlfriend bi***ing at me about fishing I asked her " How long has this been going on for?" She said " A LONG TIME"... I then told her " Well, you should be used to it by now".... That did not go over to well either....

Congrats on the newbie

Well according to my Journal I had ....

24 outings

on 7 different waters

6 times I didn't bring fish home (usually shoot for a dozen or so nice pannies not for a limit as that's all I care to clean at a time, most trips 3 - 5 hrs)

kept 262 fish

not a bad year and I'm not done yet.

I didn't keep stats so my season went like this:

Went fishing - a lot
Fish caught - a lot
Fun had fishing - a lot
Fun had posting and learning from Iceshanty.com - a lot
Good looking girls seen running around on the ice in bikinis - none
Even with that ... an exceptional year !!!

Put up 20 qts of gill filets and gave away another 15 qts through out the season, have no clue how many times I fished but it was a lot. I was sick for 4 days and didn't fish,,other then that I was out. Mostly Bluegills, not a banner year by no means. I think all the rain and thaws dispersed some of my hot spots. seemed most folks in my area agreed. I ate fish 4 out of 7 days during the ice on. I had my last fresh meal today for a while. Ready for warmer weather now since I can't walk on the water any more this winter.

Its not over yet! There are still trucks on ice around Cadillac and Lake City. I fished Burt Lake last weeked, that ice will be there for a long time.
The charm of fishing is that it is the pursuit of what is elusive but attainable, a perpetual series of occasions for hope.
