Clearwater lakers
« on: Mar 25, 2008, 08:33 PM »
Fished over to Clearwater today in Industry. Not much action on traps but jigged one nice lake trout (~23"). I gutted it on the ice and its was full of small smelts. Boy, I hope they open up the shores to dipping this spring.
Sorry no digital camera, need to invest in one.

I have probably dipped more smelts out of this lake than just about any other lake in the whole state. It was a shame when it was closed down but it goes back to it was not for the decline in smelts but the ignorance of a few that got this pond shut down to begin with.If they do open this lake back up we as smelters are really going to have to police ourselves. No trash left behind, no setting camp fires on peoples lawns with there firewood off there pile of wood on there porch, no blocking off driveways so people cant come and go as they want, and last but most major no vandalism!!!!!! This is a great pond and a sure loss to the bait resource around the state when it was shut down. Lets only hope it gets opened back up and folks mind there manners. This time hopefully the Maine state warden's stay off Swain Road until it dries up so it is passable. When this water was closed down before a Maine warden drove down this road and buried his truck in the middle of it and blamed it on the smelters so this added into it getting closed down as well. But this same warden got caught stealing firewood on state of Maine time and never lost his job. :%$#!: :%$#!: But that is another story for another day!  To get back to the post I really hope it gets opened back up 8)

I agree, if the riff raff stays out (but, this is Maine) I think most of the people who actually goes out to smelt and not drink will have an excellent time. The state should also think about closing dipping Friday and Saturday nights since those are the most popular nights to get rowdy (never will happen though -too little enforcement, but it would be a good deterrent).

Sounds like you have a problem with wardens. Good sportsmanship is common sense.  There are a few out there that ruin it for others I dont think the warden is the blame. ::)

It was this time, he drove his truck down a road he should not have been on. He got stuck had a wrecker pull him out and he blamed the smelters for the ruts which costed a pretty penny to fix. Treat the wardens how they treat me, had more bad expience's than good.

Kept two togue out of Clearwater a week or so ago and neither one had a thing in their stomachs.   ???  Most of the fish we caught were a little on the skinny side.  Still fun to jig, though.   :)
I know there are a bunch of smelt in there, but it didn't look like these fish had seen any in awhile.
