Wind River Wilderness
« on: Mar 12, 2008, 07:42 PM »
Skied/snowshoed into Long Lake above Fremont last Sunday.  Spectacular day, caught a ton of 12-18" brookies, cutthroat and cutt-bows, kept a mess for dinner.

Even saw what appeared to be wolverine tracks!!!

Did you see the wolverine or his tracks?  These tracks were only about 16-20 inches apart, a real short stride.

It was about 7 miles round trip to the inlet area of the lake.  Postholed w/snowshoes on the way out, definitely better when there was a nice crust.

No lake trout in there, but a buddy that came along with us turned around because he did not have snowshoes (only skis).  He caught a 15 pound lake trout near the inlet of Fremont, so it all worked out in the end!!!

Did you see the wolverine or his tracks?..

we were just waking up after spending the night at about 9500 ft in open canyon, above phelps lake, and i looked over and a wolverine was loping along about 100 yds away, coming towards us.  he got to about 35 yds out, saw us, and stopped.  i punched my one friend that was close enough and pointed, so he saw it before the wolverine turned and continued across the slope and down into a rock field where we lost him.  he was probably about 120+ lbs or so, all black with a big white stripe from his nose around both sides to the tail.  big yellow eyes.  didn't act scared of us at all; just acted like he had somewhere to go.

i would say those are wolverine tracks that you saw, too.  pretty sweet.  i read somewhere that the individual adult has a range of like 500 miles.

he was probably about 120+ lbs or so

BD they don't get that big, Your over estimating everything as usual.  On Wikipedia it said they get to 20-60lbs. It was probably an elk, or a deer that u saw, or someones dog.

The ice was very solid, at least enough that we never went through the top layer.  Down by the inlet I drilled the holes near open water and the ice was only a foot or so.  By the outlet, the thickness of the ice nearly maxed out the auger, multiple layers of ice and slush--no fun to drill holes!!

The WGFD biologist agreed that these were wolverine tracks.  The tracks were pretty good sized but the distance between them was short, much smaller than the bear and lion tracks I have seen.

We followed this guys tracks for almost 2 miles, but he covered a lot more ground than we did.  He seemed to be investigating the tallus slopes, and his tracks went right up to a hole we saw a pika come out of...

yeah, well, when one is staring you down from 35 yards, they probably look larger than life.  sorry, wikispudbar.

You seem to be scared of everything BD. JB's friend watched a humpack bear all day on Saturday on J Lake, said it was hungry and **censored**y.

I saw one up above Dubois about 3 years ago while we were elk hunting.  It was amazing, but of course the Game and Fish denies it and said they are not in this region.

Nice pics man...looks like a good time!

So does this mean all of BD's fish that he said were 36" are really only about 15? lol

Cool! There is a radio-collared female wolverine in the Bridger Wilderness that the WCS has been trying to catch and re-collar. I have not heard yet if they were successful in the recapture or if they caught any new wolverines. The only one I ever saw was in Alaska running along the coastline ~75 yards from our boat. When it crossed a snow field I knew exactly what it was...
