Perfect Ice
« on: Mar 04, 2008, 07:32 PM »
Not ice fishing but ice anyway. After the rain we had yesterday & the cold snap today, I noticed on the way home from work all the lakes were a perfect glare of ice. When I got home I said to my son "Get your warm clothes on. We're going ice skating!" The lake behind our house is 115 acres, and it was like one big ice skating rink. We went completely around it & had a blast! We skated for about 2 hours & the only reason we quit was because of darkness. And because my old legs felt like rubber, too. But a great time on the ice. One of those father/son times we'll never forget.  :) :) :) :) :)

Good question.  ;) And figured I'd get a little ribbing. Believe me I thought about it. But opted for skating because it was perfect skating conditions & not so perfect fishing conditions. They were calling for (& we got) a couple inches of snow last night and you just don't get a perfect snow free ice very often.
Not to mention tonight will be a lot better for fishing. The winds died down, some snow cover...... Yeah buddy, we'll be out fishing tonight!!! Best of both worlds.  ;D

I love that glare ice, I'm not a big fan of snow on the ice.

When I was a much younger person, I was a speed skater. Occasionally the Barge canal would freeze that way and we could skate for miles on end on perfect ice.

I was fishing the canal a few weeks back and the ice was very clear and near perfect. A family with 3 little girls came out to skate. Made miss the old offsets.

Our other option was a public, outdoor rink that was basically 4 connected baseball fields which were flooded (intentionally) each year. Every so often they would re-flood the ice to cap it off....no Zambonis I'm afraid.

LOL! Nope, no spandex or tutu's, just carharts & hockey skates. Not too graceful either. Did a couple effortless belly flops, though. Hurts more than it used to, I noticed.  :D
