HELP!!!!!!!!!
« on: Feb 26, 2008, 08:34 PM »
the lake i fish at has a small crappie population with big fish, i can catch these crappie easily in the summer but can't find any in the winter.
the max depth of the lake in winter is 17'-18' there is a large island in the middle of the lake in a kind of bottleneck, there is weeds and moss in the shallower areas during the times with thick ice and snow, the rest  of the time the bottom is covered with weeds. the south side of the island tends to be the year-round honey-hole for gills and perch.
i need tips to catch these crappie in the hardwater months.

crappie are easy to mark.  start drillin till you find them. Any creek beds or creeks in the lake.  Fish those.  Maybe the lake is a night bite kinda place.. ;)
Bullet with a name on it.

if you had a camera you could just drill a bunch of holes til you find them. thats what i usualy do on new lakes i'd try it at night in shallows where the blue gills are biting or look for them suspended in the deep hole

Keep cutting holes.  I sometimes catch them in the deepest water I can find.  They are almost always suspended above the bottom.  If you are catching gills in an area, the crappie should be near by.  Towards ice out, key on the island, they should be moving up to spawn.  I have caught them in 4 fow or less late in the season.  I hope this helps.
BOILER UP!!!!!!!!!!!
