Salmo Chubby Darters ???????
« on: Jan 29, 2008, 11:41 AM »
Where can I find The new size ( small ) # 3 I think Chubby Darters . Gander in Cicero might have had them but after checking 4 times they only have a couple of odd pattern ones . Do they restock ???? I have asked the sales person and they didn't know what I was talking about.

I'm hoping to find out just how well these work for catching fish. I bought a few for the CD3 from red rock, just waiting for them to come in the mail.

I used one last weekend for the first time. I like the action (I watched on my camera). The fish didn't hop all over them though. I just got the smaller size this week so I'll give them a shot. Worse case they should be an ok open water lure.
I was also reading on a Minn. ice board how the general users felt they were hyped up and didn't produce any better than anything else. I think the exact comment was " they work on the days when anything works". Another guy wished he hadn't gotten caught up in the hype because at 6.95 a piece he felt they were not worth the money.

i'm waiting for a few more trips before I pass judgement. My two trips using them: the first didn't have much fish around period so you can't blame the lure for that. Second I did land a couple nice perch and only had one come in to look and shy away. Then I switched to the Hali and had some decent action.
Of coarse the hali was tipped and the chubby wasn't.

Ive been using the size three for walleyes the past couple trips out.  The glow darters seem to be preferred, tipped with a perch eye, ive caught a couple eyes and a couple perch.  Not too bad, redrockstore is where i ordered them from also.  I know theres a shop in Ct that has them, but doesnt have the other colors im looking for.  Great for open water vertical jigging too.

I've had pretty good luck on them this year. I like to be jigging one and have a bobber pole with a minnow next to it, tag team style, it seems to work pretty good. Fishing gets slow when we hit a cold snap and we've been in a cold snap for about the last month  >:(. fishing has been too slow for them lately, tip downs kinda work, but gotta downsize to a 14 or 16 jig and pray for a bite, lotsa lookers, few takers.
The fishing is always great, the catching however, always isn't

Here in upstate NY and NE PA the # 3 glow red works the best for us for perch and crappie..at least thats what has been caught on it so far...or # 3 real roach.....tip em or not they work when the fish want them...

i have only tied on a chubby darter 2 or 3 times. The action looks good, but they need to weigh about 3 times as much as they do.
There is only one theory about angling in which I have perfect confidence, and this is that the two words, least appropriate to any statement, about it, are the words "always" and "never."

I'm sold on the number 3...I was already sold on the other sizes - but the number 3 worked great the only time I've tried it this year.  I tied the thing on, dropped it down, and just before it gets to the bottom my reel tangles.  There I am untangling my reel, with the chubby 5 feet off the bottom, when out of the corner of my eye I see a large mark on the vex go flying up towards the bait...I grab my line and WHAM!!! I get whacked!!  I handline the fish in.  13.75" yellow perch. One of my biggest through the ice!  I put the lure back down, jig a little longer, and get another, even bigger perch, 14.25"!!

I purchased some Chubby Darters last week (size 3's and 4's).  they worked great this past week on walleyes, perch and bass.  I will be buying more this week.

Brian, What colors seemed to work the best?   At that price I'm not buying every color of every size!! ::)

Who has them locally I checked Dicks and Gander, neither had them?

I used the perch color.  Cabelas was out of hot perch when I ordered.  I can't remember the other colors I purchased.  I have not used them yet.
