Solunar tables for January's fishing
« on: Jan 22, 2008, 11:42 PM »
I will see if I can post a picture here...two tries failed.
Here is the solunar table for the rest of January. It came from infisherman site.
The tables work very well for me most of the time especially if one considers the barometer along with the dates and times. The below are some gorge pictures.
I have great luck following it. Maybe attached pictures if it works will justify.

Here's a picture if it works:

And if it all worked:

Looked at the one the day before we were going on a trip and it said it should be poor fishing and we killed 'em so I never looked at one again....lol. don't know how much trust to put into one...but as I said, never look at them. Should start as crappy as last week was....lol.

I've seen one of these before with phases of the moon and a phase of the fish to coincide with it.  Never used one though.  Do they really work :cookoo:

Here's a good table I pulled off the main forum and bookmarked. Take a look.

I can't make them work for hunting but fishing it works for me quite well. Based on the moon phases, it is simpler than looking up the tables.  A few days before the full moon (3-4) and the full moon are both very good fishing when the moon is straight up and straight down (the back side of the earth exactly from where you are).  The best is the couple of days before the new moon and the day of the new moon (which is two weeks different from the full moon), again, a couple of hours +- of when the moon is straight up or rising to straight up and straight down below the earth.
If you watch the barometer faithfully as good fishermen do, and watch the moon, the two will give you about double or triple the chances of limiting out on fish. In spring when fish are feeding heavy, and the barometer is falling (and between 29.80 and 30.20), and coming into the new moon, I abandon work and go live for fishing.
Today I caught 3 bows and lost 4, probably nibbling lings, one bait had green algae and slime on it when it was spit up.  Solunar table said ok to good but not real good (as was Sunday due to barometer and rising moon going full).   Today the barometer was gently falling from 30.13 to 30.06 when I quit fishing at 5 pm.  Tomorrow the fishing would be not as good due to the moon waning from full x 2 days, BUT the barometer will be dropping due to minor front coming in late night so tomorrow should be better fishing than today....maybe.  I saw lots of feeding deer, lots of hawks and eagles feeding today, both also are good indicators of wildlife activity including fishes.
So, my next book will be on bait!

Hey WYIfish

Thanks for info.  Is there a particular book / booklet you use?  I'm sure there are the naysayers about following this type of thing, but hey, it can't hurt (and if nothing else it would make for interesting reading when the fish aren't biting).

thanks again

Get a good old fashioned calendar with the moon rise and moon set and moon phases.  Even a calendar with new, full and the two quarters will get you by, just look up to see when the moon is up top dead center.

I actually do like to fish...in Summer. But, catching a big bragging size mess of fish in the winter is preferred.
I guess that is the beauty in fishing. To relate it to automobiles, 1970 396  350 hp chevelle or classic 57 283 220 hp ?  But how I do love the smell of alcohol burning in the morning :)

Real life example tested on 2-5 lb rainbows and ling, Flaming Gorge, WY This week:

Sunday, temp. 10 above 0, barometer 30.12 steady to rising gently, caught 5 + lost 20. Fished 8 hours, 25 fish~events. 3+ fish related events per hour I spent on the ice. Two days before full moon. Fishing peak hours.

Yesterday, temp. 10 above 0, barometer 30.10 steady to falling a pinch. Caught 3 + lost 4. Fished 8 hours, 7 fish~events. -1 fish related event per hour I spent on the ice. One day after full moon. Fishing peak hours.

Pick one. Fishing is great but the increased potential for catching is why I actually go when I do( and eveyone asks, how does this guy get to go fishing twice in the same week).   I prefer to work with advance scheduling (what are the moon, and weather fronts doing) to better the odds of catching. When I want to sit and watch I like to go to a park, or better yet don't leave the barkolounger-its winter where's Orlando Wilson).  I do not drive 40 miles one way, with gas at $3 a gallon,in a gas sucking 4X4,towing a big trailer with ATV and all the proper fishing equipment to a lake with 50 pound lakers to sit on the ice and think about cold wet fish...In winter, and with the temp of 10, I prefer to stay as active as possible.
Never let the fish win. Good fishermen make their own luck.
Here's a link to the other three seasons of fishing at the gorge:

Enjoy!

There were a number of "happy" people fishing at the honey spot yesterday, all day long for the most part. They iced 0 that I was able to confirm.
I would like to believe I had more "fun" catching fish :-*
We both experienced no wind. Pick one.  Sorry I am a S#*t! ::) ???

I know several people (along with some outdoor writers) that have diligently recorded there fishing in log books over many years.  When they went back and compared their angling success with the Solunar tables there was no correlation.  Weather conditions, time of day and water temperature (obviously not a factor when ice fishing) were the only variables that appeared to affect fishing success.

Just my 2 cents!!

Thanks for the info.
I am going fishing to a good spot tomorrow. The tables say fishing will suck (especially after 5 days of pigging out before the new moon logic and field observations-catching fishes).  So, I will log time fished, and fishes bit and caught. I will have a witness along.
The barometer will be falling due to Sundays front moving in, so we will determine if the solunar table is more or less important than a frontal approach.   We will also test if 12 lines in an area fish are known to frequent, and using methods that recent history has proven to catch fish.
With bugs all out of my gear, methodology, and mind....I should catch fish even though the solunar table says no........I am exibiting  the power of positive thinking......I think, there for I catch fish.  Who knows that varible. Weather should be great at a forecast 30 degrees and winds less than 10 mph.
I will predict I will catch more fish.......than siting on the couch at home.

WYIfish    is my id from Wyoming and I is for I or ice fish.  Maybe I should change it to  WY (why) I (I) catch!  Or ?   WYIcatch...mmm does have a ring of confidence or bravado!

Well, I think one can not judge the value of solunar tables, weather instuments and all that stuff if you use green marshmellows and nightcrawlers in a fish hatchery as you will catch fish if they are there and hungry regardless of the weather or moon phase.   ::)
I fished 5 hours caught 5, threw one back, missed 4 additional on a "poor" day.  The falling barometer seem to have made up for the lessor moon phase. Additionally, cloud cover over head seemed to help the spooky fish to feed in the shallower areas. The bite was already in progress at 7:30 AM when the first tip up went in the water, wasn't hardly light out.

I seem to catch same size same variety most of the time. I guess that anytime you can go fish is good.  Anytime you can consistantly take fish, don't tell anybody where your hole is. ???
