What kind of swivels do you use???
« on: Nov 21, 2008, 07:41 AM »
Never used them yet under the ice, but from what I'm seeing its the way to go for jigging. What size and type of swivels do you use? Do you go ball bearing or just the smallest barrel swivel you can find?

I use swivels under my tip ups, the barrel swivels have always worked for me.  I tried some swivels on my jigging sticks for panfish a few years ago but they were always getting hung up under the ice and popping throw my guides real hard... now I just use a uni knot to put some flourocarbon leader on my jigging sticks.  Flourocarbon doesn't seem to twist like mono.

I also use barrel swivels under my tip-ups between my dacron line and leader and use a small black snap swivels for jigging. I don't jig for pan fish, usually its larger game fish.

small barrell swivels when jigging with spoons, as they can do some interesting things to your line...I like sidewinder spoons, they really dart and can mess with your line.

As for panfish, i dont really use a swivel either, the action is not as erradic as with a spoon so they are not really needed.

I sometimes use them on my tip-ups depending on what I have one.

I use the smallest possible swivel for the size of fish I hope for. I get a good supply annually from good old Cabelas. They have a great selection and I use the small "snaps" that are one single wire formed into a loop without any swivel.

I attach a swivel to the Dacron line to a short "leader" of fluorocarbon then to the hook or a snap to the lure for easy cold finger exchanges.

Fish hard and live long !!!!!

Small black swivel at the end of the wax line and then 3' of monofilament tied to that with a octopus #8 hook(red) tied on the end.  What kind of hooks does everyone use for live-bait, and what color?

I guess you can call em swivels.. you have a barrel swivel .. a snap swivel  or to me I call them barrels.. sampo or any quality barrel like a steelhead barrel is fine for small spoons.. any teardrops or small jigheads i would  go straight ice mono

I use the very snallest Sampo ball-bearing swivel they have all the time.
Tie in my Berkley Fireline Micro Ice 4 lb. test at one end and about 18" of Flourocarbon leader (1 to 4 lb. test) at the other for what fish I'm targeting.

I use the smallest barrel swivel with the thinking that I can still see the hole to thread it. Getting older.
