Meredith Bay
« on: Jan 09, 2008, 06:29 PM »
The town opened up the boat launch at Hesky park today , not sure about the ice thickness. I have seen about a dozen  people fishing it this week .

Good to know, now its just a matter of finding out how the ice held up over this terrible warm weather.

Talked with a guy that fished this a.m. and said it was 4" in spots and less in others. Doesn't sound to safe to me. No one out there today.

Have you fished Waukewan lately? We've given that lake some time. The fishing has been slow the past couple weeks for us.

I believe someone has a bobhouse out there now, boat ramp opened up a little bit so we will just have to get on the ice by the rocks. Should be a interesting morning :cookoo:

Howdy,

Yep - it is indeed a zoo but a fun one!!  Nothin like it!
Fishing around all those snomobiles can be .... interesting.  Lots of speed and noise in the open areas.  I prefer the bays.

Yup ! One brave person put a house on the boat launch area this afternoon. It's scary ! The big lake rose roughly 2.5" , Wic Was rose almost 5" in eight hours today.

Just imagine pulling out Stripers or Blues out of the ice. Your out there smelting, doing your thing and WHAM......a 32 inch Striper hits. That would be a blast.

Can you land Sea Run Browns or the like when your out on Tidal rivers or are they gone by then?

I have a buddy that fishes out by Odione Point in Rye in the fall. He goes out for Sea Run Browns and has good luck. They don't stick around for winter do they?

Its very uncommon, but its has happened. I've spoken to several smelt fishermen who have caught small hold over stripers when jigging for smelt.

Its actualy not as uncommon as you may think.  I know a few guys who catch stripers up here all 12 months of the year!  However most of them just didnt make it past the lock before the last boat went through so they got stuck till next year.

Anybody venture out beyond the harbor? I might be staying on Spindle Point for the derby, and that is way down Meredith Bay towards the broads. Never been there but might be staying at a buddy's lake house.

Thanks!

Spindle point is notorious for cars going thru there over the years. Some nasty currents I guess.

Wow, well I'll be on foot, but good to know regardless. If they're saying 4 inches in the bay, than I'd imagine even less out there huh?

The bay has 4" and there is still only one house out there and it's close to shore by the boat launch ,which is pretty dark ,wet looking ice. Spindle point is tricky because of the underlying rocks and currents from the nearby streams.

I fished out that way a few years back and another thing to mention here is the heavy snowmobile traffic, it's like a raceway to the board!

Good point but do you think it will be as bad if the broads are still open?

You could always stay at your buddies but fish elsewhere, away from the traffic. I doubt the broads wont be safe by then, just look at what happened last year. I would have sworn there was no way the lake would have been locked up like it was. And then it locked up, go figure.

Well I figured after 7 derbies of hardcore fishing, that if I was to stay in Meredith I'd just join in with the circus for once, and the fishing would almost be secondary.

I can't really tell by the map, how close is Spindle to the the park/boards?

Not sure if you can see or not but spindle Pt is approx 5-10 min ride depending on what your using by ice. it does get like a speedway because most people traveling the lake coming from the east and south pass between Eagle and Spindle pt. They use the bouys as markers to round the point.

Hopefully by the Derby we'll have plenty of ice. It's supposed to be cold the rest of the week into next.
I've fished Eagle and Spindle in the past and the only thing I did'nt like was all the snowmobiles racing by.
You can count on this if the Broads freeze. but if you move into the coves a bit you can avoid the traffic a little better

I never fished spindle but Ive fished just south around the corner and its fairly rocky. Its also rocky around Eagle with some large bolders. That area can produce some large cusk if you can keep the snowmobiles from running over you lines. I usually look for some bouys to set up between. Its handy to have a camera with you to set your lines so your not on top of a rock. Once you find a spot thats clear you should have decent luck. Hope this helps

The west side is mostly sand where the east side is mostly rock.  Between the peninsula and that small island to the west (forget the name) it is sandy in the middle but as you get closer to either shore it gets rocky.  To the south west of the point goint out 100-150 yards it's all sand until you get to the point where it becomes rocky.
