VHS   bait must be certified recepit must be carried and bait cannot be more than a week old...  lots more rules also.... if you catch your own bait you cannot use it in another lake...Viral Hemmoragatic Syndrome or something to that effect  LOL.  It sucks for me in the winter my bait can live more than a week with a filter in the baitbucked and its tough to get bait in the winter with my local baitshop closed...I believe there worried about you bringing your bait lake to lake with the one week rule...

The new bait laws are in place to keep VHS disease from spreading.  It is already in a hand full of lakes.  One of my favorite lakes has VHS present and it is really taking a toll on the walleye population.  In the spring, lots of slob walleyes float up on the shores of this lake.

That's why I love coming over the border to New York.  The way Vermont's are written, you need to bring a lawyer with you.  Probably just the first step to no more live bait usage.

Other than getting a cert Michigans hasn't really changed.  I'm pleasantly surprised.
there are still plenty of minnows in the bait stores and a decent variety.  doesn't seem like price was affected too much either.

They State of Vermont has this all screwed up.  We are having Meetings on this issue starting Jan.29 but according to the F&G website they are voting on this rule tonight?? Not sure if its the rule to be law or just parts of the new rule. Either way it is rediculous that we dont even have a say before they vote.  I have talked to a few bait dealers on that side of Champlain that are palnning to attend these meetings, whatever good it may do.

here in wisconsin we have to dump out bait at the end of every trip, fear of spreading vhs.  not quite sure if its the same in ny but thats the way it is in wisconsin, and believe if you catch that virus in your lake you will definitely regret dumpin a few minnows out.  we got it in our lake last year and havent seen full results yet but the sheepshead kill was unbelieavable.  this year will be the tell-tale year as to see how bad it really is on our walleye population

Well thats just it, Ny, and Vt both have Lk. Champlain, The problem is that the bait laws right now are different per side.  I have no problem abiding by a new law, I just want them to get it right to protect all of us.  I fear that no matter what we do(aside from spending billions of dollars to close champlain down from any other waterbody) it is too late for lake Champlain and we will most definatley get it as we are connected to the same St. Lawrence that brought it to the Great Lakes.  I think that our state should focus on the Inland lakes as the ones we have the most control over.  The other thing is, this is NOT JUST a bait issue.  There are many boats that come up the St. Lawrence water way that bring their bilge into Lake Champlain, Not to mention other fish.  Last time I checked, Fish don't care where the State Line is.  If i am fishing Lake Champlain i should be able to buy my bait anywher to use for Lake Champlain, If i decide to fish somewhere else i will buy new Certified fresh bait and leave the other stuff at home.

thats exactly it my home lake (lake winnebago) is connected to the fox river which is dumps into lake michigan it was inevetable that we got vhs and some of the other invading speices in our lake but the winnebago chain is huge it has to big tributary rivers that have miles and miles of shoreline that in turn have only dams to stop these kinds of things, it seems to me that us as fisherman can be as careful as we want but its not going to matter, thats my fear.  winnebago i think could definitely survive this but like you said the smaller inland lakes should be the focus!  99 out of 100 fisherman could follow every guide line and then the 1 out of 100 that doesnt will screw things up majorly, i have already talked to guys that have told to ---- the laws i am not buyin minnows every time i go, there you go it has to be enforced and we dont have the resources in wisconsin to do so, in my eyes its only a matter of time.  i hope i am wrong

You would think that a State of our size would have no problem in enforcing the laws at a much higher success rate on our inland lakes, but that is not the case.  NY has a different bait law, they can keep their bait for 7 days and take it on and off the ice as they see fit. While i am sure that there are a few out there that no better than to use it at one Lake then turn around with  the same bait and use it somewhere else, I fear that  most are not doing it and therefore increase their chances of spreading VHS.   It's not just the people who fish that should be held accountable for this and it seems that, that is what Vt is implying to us.  What about the family who brings their boat out for a nice day at the Lake,  Do they clean and disinfect thier vessel before going to a different lake the next weekend?  Those of you that Bass fish from Lake to Lake(just using as an example), Do all of you Sanitize and Disinfect your boats?  While I hope you do, I know a lot that don't.  Ny has some of the best kept Boat Launches on at least Lake Champlain ( Vermonts are crude at best), Is there a clean out hose at any of them?  If not then there should be.  The States that we live in should be smart enough to come up with ways for the people who are not as responsible to get the hint.  Seriously How much would it cost to but a few hose stations around a Launch to clean your bilges and wells out.  I would think it would be a whole lot cheaper to do that then have to kill of a whole lake and start over again.  Regardless it is like walleyewacker said, 'it only takes 1 person to destroy a whole Lake for years to come.  I want to make sure that my kids and grandkids(someday mind you) will get to expierience the smae thrills that i have had over the years.

Doogie,  The F&W board votes are just part of the process, nothing will be final until after the public meetings.

The rule also includes boats and water in bilges if you read it.  It doesn't spell out the disinfection process though.
