Hook Color
« on: Dec 12, 2010, 09:01 AM »
I really think this is just another case of me looking into this whole pike thing too much but have you guys experimented with different color hooks and have you seen any differences in flag ratio. Reason I ask is I generally use black gamakatsu hooks, but the shop I went to only had VMC hooks which have a silver finish? Should I be worried about using silver hooks?

No, you should not be worried at all, I use silve hooks on some of my pike rigs and did not notice a difference in the amount of flags. I tend towards red hooks, but that may be a fisherman preferecen over fish preference

Pike aren't my primary fish to chase during the winter but do it enough in the winter to have experimented some. Last winter seemed to do better with red hooks and as a twist, made some quick strike rigs using bleeding wire (red) with the red hooks when making them up and did very well. Generally a dead bait user and anything that makes it look more vulnerable/dying/hurt will rarely hurt. If they're hungry or aggressive not sure it matters, pushing them over the edge when a bit picky, maybe, makes me feel better though

I don't know how the silver will affect the pike as I use only the bronze color and red.

I dont think it makes a whole lot of difference with pike. I've used both, and haven't seen an increase with either.

There was a local bait shop that use to make a trebble hook with red and white buck tail. They would always get more pike on those compared to a plain bronze hook.

pike do not care what color your hooks are!!!!!!if they come within ten feet of your bait they came to eat not admire what color hooks you think she likes! thats why you keep getting it wrong with your old lady! lol.
trout make big pike fat and happy!
