Knot Suggestion

What knot do you use for tying a 2nd pin-mini, fly or marmasooka above your lower one?

I tie a LARGE Dropper Loop about 18 inches above my bottom lure.  Then I cut one leg of the loop, close to the main line.  This leaves you with a long "tag-end", to which I tie a small ice fly or hair fly.  Tip the fly with a Waxie, or Spike.

Wow.. Cutting the Dropper Loop won't cause the knot to unravel or the line to separate?  I'm  gonna have to try that. THANKS FOR THE TIP!!!! ;D

( For the last few years, I've been tying a Trilene Knot or Polomar Knot, but just wasnt satisfied with the action and overal knot strength.

I use a blood knot, clip one tag and use the other.

a properly tied polomar knot will yeild no less than 98-100 percent knot strength. the trilene knot is also strong giving greater than 96% when properly tied. i use the uni-knot which will give greater than 98% knot strenght. After the dropper loop is cut you still have to tie the lure on so from a knot strength stand point this is bad because you now have two joints instaed of one. that isn't to say it doesn't work, it is just to say it will not improve know strenght, it will actually decrease it.

i use the uni-snell or the improved speed snell to the upper jig. uni-knot to the lower one. i love the uni-knot. it is by far the most versatile knot in fishing.

Agreed. Unless I need a loop knot or am rigging for drop shot rig, I use uni knot exclusively. Full confidence, as I have never had one fail when properly tied. The line will break somewhere else before the knot fails.

Agreed the palomar or the uni-know are freat knots, but, the question was what knot to tie on a second fly or lure above the bottom lure.  If you use the palomar or uniknot your fly will be tied tight up against the main line -- no good.  Using a dropper loop with one leg cut, the upper fly will stand out from the main line and appear to be "floating" free in the water.
I've used the dropper loop trick for 30 years in salt wqater on some pretty large and feisty fish, and never had one fail or unravel.  When I tie on my upper lure to the end of the cut leg of the dropper, I use a palomar (if the eye of the lure is large enough to accept doubled line) or the basic cliunch know if I can only pass a single strand thru the eye.
Keep in mind also, the eye of an ice fly is so tiny that you would have great difficulty passing a double line thru it....even 2 lb. test!!
