yeah ive done almost all my ice fishing at nite and always catch crappie or bluegills....decent sized ones too, not those baby ones....i also have caught a couple perch but those were baby sized on the other hand :-[ ,and yes the thing with the lantern does kinda suck.....but my dual fuel coleman came with a carrying case so i have nothin to worry about! i have also sat on a lake all day long from 10:00 am and the fish didnt start biting until 6:00pm when it got dark...so idk if i had to choose.....it wouldnt matter to me!

where should i be looking for perch and crappie at night. are they above weed flats, right under the ice, on drop offs or what?

also, what about tip ups with a small glow stick on the line, think that would work?

Deep vertical structure.  Such as timber.  Adjacent to weedy deep flats.  With a pink glow Bro bug.

fishing for crappie after dark is the single-most thing i am looking forward to. i imagine it would be harder to do without a fishfinder of some kind. i have the best luck in relatively deeper water. but the crappie come off the bottom (or somewhere) and on some nights they are all over the water column. but it seems like primarily 2/3 of the way down. (like 10' deep in 15' of water) i have good luck near some kind of major structure like submerged road beds or steep breaks, out away a bit in deeper water. some nights its on, and some nights it isnt. you know how that goes. seems like the higher up the fish are, the more they are willing to bite. i beleive theyre up there to feed. i think theyre raking. im not sure. only thing i know for sure is i cant wait for that type of fishing!!

I usually target burbot at night... Apparently smelt fishing can get pretty wicked here as well at night!
A couple guys last year caught over 200 in a few hours night

I do 80% of my fishing at night, mostly for eyes.  Ive been out the last 5 out of 8 night in some cooooold weather for them, I think Im up to almost 40 eyes, 30 being at night.
some general night info, lights are nice, but so is reflective tape on your flags. quick shine of the flashlight and you can see your flag from a mile away.
some say full moon nights are no good, but with glow hooks they can be killer for perch and eyes.
Pike will occasionally bite at night as will trout.
use as much glow stuff as possible, jigs, hooks, whatever you can to attract the fish.
I use a couple bluefox rattle jigs that will attract fish just as good as a glow jig.

good luck

I second the reflective tape.

Night fishing is all I seem to be able to do. I have caught gills all the way up til' 1:00am. Like most of the post before, it all depends on the lake and the weather. I really enjoy the crappies also at night. It just seems that they bite better at night. I've also caught gills and crappies early in the morning, way before sunrise, 4am. On some of the lakes that I fish, if I get out early, before sunrise, I can catch them as fast as I can get the line down the hole, but when the sun comes up they get very tight liped. Most of the time I use a Moon Glow Jig with some kind of glitter on the back tipped with a wax worm.
