I have never even tryed red line for summer fishing, let alone for ice fishing. Shakespeare makes CAJUN RED line as low as 4lb test. So I was thinking about trying it this winter for gills/perch/ crappyies. The lake I mainly ice fish is stained, about3-4' visibilty. Does water clearity matter on using red line, I have no idea.

You should be glad you asked the question, because anybody who fishes with me in the spring, summer and fall knows I use Red Cajun, mostly because of the strength it has at 4lbs... so I have alot of experience with this line, both through the ice and open water, but I can say Red Cajun is NOT made for ice.  Mainly, because the diameter (its thicker compared to Silverthread or Berkley ice line (my choices through the ice)), but I have also noted that the memory is amplified in the colder climates, and it forms ice on it alot faster, in the warmer climates there is little to no memory and is a great line.  I hope this helps, as through the ice, memory can mean everything, as noted by some of the most avid ice anglers.

Ya, I figured since its made mainly for warm water and not cold. But for ice fishing the past 40 yrs, I have mainly used regular summer line for ice fishing. Every once in a while I by line thats made for winter, but most of the time. I just buy regular summer 2-4LB line.

What I was getting at, does any one think the color red makes any differance in catching more/less fish thru the ice. I thought since in the winter fish are not as active, that maybe the red line would entice them more to bite.

I figured the same thing (the color might make for a better opportunity), but when the line comes off the spool like a slinky, the color thing goes right out the window.  Like you, I used regular line though the ice, as well, for years... but when I finally broke down and bought the ice line, I could tell the difference right away, but who knows... I am sure others have different views.

im sure color does have a difference, but if your water is normally stained then the fish are going to be used to hunting with there lateral line and sensing vibrations more then site

Actually, they make an ice line that goes down to 2 lbs.  Some other companies have started to make red mono, but at this point I'm not sure if it's better for catching fish or catching fishermen.  They got me for one spool, but I haven't had a chance to use it yet.

I guess I misunderstood to whole consept of red line. I actual thought maybe red line came out to attract fish to the lure or bait, just like the red hooks. I now can see red line was made to hide the line.

Cajun makes a red ice line...Stays fishable in sub-zero temperatures
Highly visible against ice and snow
Virtually disappears under water
Made in the U.S.A. ,  I know using red trebles on erie for eye trolling has improved my catchin, and also on my local rivers in Indiana. Not convinced of the red lines yet, but it is supposed to be INVISABLE, or the closest thing for fish not to see due to cones/rods in the eyes of fish. Go figure....

Red line is invisible to hide it from a fish.

Red hooks are to be visible to attract fish.

Hmmm.  Seems hypocritical to me, had a debate about this last year.

Since we're on the topic of line does anyone know the difference/ benefits of flouro carbon leader line. Not to be confused w/ flouro carbon line. It is about $15 for 40 yd spool. They say you get what you pay for but I need some convincing for a 400% mark up. I've seen Vanish and Seagore (spelling?)

what i have been led to believe is the seagaur floro 100% is just that. alot of lines are "coated" and as they scuff and nick they are more visable.
leader material has alot more memory and is pretty stiff in cold temps. but as it scuffs it still retains its reflective qualities.
have used vanish 2# FOR A # OF YEARS AND VERY HAPPY!

The color red is the first to disappear due to the light refractivity of water. I believe in normal water clarity you can not longer see the color red in 2-4' of water. IT DOES NOT BECOME TRANSPARENT! It merely becomes a shade of gray. This happens to all colors in the spectrum with blue being the last to lose its color (10' or deeper). So red hooks on a spinnerbait or rattle trap MIGHT stimulate more strikes in shallow water, but in my opinion the whole "disappearing" red line thing is marketing rubbish. Why would you want a dark gray line when you could have a clear mono or flouro line?
Photobucket can suck it

That is exactly why I thought red line was being used to attract fish. I new that the red hooks where "supposed" to make the lure look like it was bleeding. So I just assumed red line could be seen by fish and somehow attracted fish to the lure/jig tied on the end.

If red line is invisible to fish, then as you state. How can the red hooks attract them????

Seems there is allot of items in the fishing/hunting world that may be out there to attract the fisherman, but have no bearing on hunting or fishing. I guess this is what we call commercialization or "they will buy it if you make it", and " if it looks good ".
