atv's this weekend
« on: Dec 20, 2007, 11:50 AM »
are any of you guys going to use your atv's this weekend? i know the snows deep, but do you think the ice conditions are good enough..........i am talking small ponds
when chuck norris played golf for money, chuck marked down a hole in zero every time, the golf pro said, "chuck: you can't score zero on a hole." Chuck norris turned towards the man and said, "I'm chuck norris, the man proceeded to pour gas over his body and set himself on fire because that would be less painful than getting roundhouse kicked by chuck norris....chuck norris roundhouse kicked him in the face anyways

Snow is way too deep and fluffly for my ATV, but I do plan on running the snowmobile across a couple local ponds (after I verify I have at least 6" of ice).  If the ice is nice on one of those ponds, I plan on tryin to jig up some crappies.

Snow has been hard on the ice formation - I went out to Clark Pond in Canaan (near Grafton) on Wednesday - - its a tiny 100 acres pond  - one half the pond had 5" white ice on top of 5" black ice, then suddenly the other half of the pond had 2" white ice and 3" of black ice!  That change happened over 100'

So, is that enough for a 600lbs wheeler with a 220lb guy riding?

I don't want to find out :(

..........then add another 300lbs for tracks............... ;)

btw, fished only 3 hrs and no fish - BEATS BEING AT WORK!
If that dog sets off one more flag............!

Nope, snows too deep and I don't know the ice conditions.
Hopefully after Sundays rain the snow thickness will diminish.

Where you able to drive your vehicle out to clark pond I know that road is a snowmobile trail. Place is tough fishing but has some monster smallmouth in it.
If I'm not fishing then I'm not happy

I couldn't drive my vehicle out to Clark Pond -just parked at the beginning of the road -  I don't have real a 4x4 (toyota highlander)

I xcountry skiied the whole way in - and out -  about 40min each way with my gear in tow on sleds ;)  Was a nice workout ;)

I fished that place a lot as a kid my folks live right near there. Use to be nice trout fishing but they don't stock it like they use to. I'm going to hit Canaan st. lake on Monday its usually pretty good for big smallies

I won't be fishing this weekend but I wouldn't take my atv out ice fishing right now.  As someone said above, I might be tempted to blast a sled across a pond on that I knew had 6+" of ice in most spots, but I would not attempt even crossing a pond with an atv, let alone parking it and fishing - unless it was in an area near shore that I had tested VERY thoroughly and knew to be safe.  ATV's plow too slowly through this deep snow - too slow to avoid danger.   I'll start ice fishing the day after Christmas.  Unless the ice on the pond I fish has accumulated a couple more inches of ice since last weekend, I suspect I'll be dragging the trap scout out by hand and fishing fairly close to shore - which is what I normally do the week of Christmas.

I'm "dying" to get my 4x4 out there - but only in the figurative sense!  Just bought a Kodiak 450 this year and can wait to take it out to play.........

Today's fishing was more of the same.  Fished one of my favorite small ponds in the lakes region today - 100 acres - the conditions could be summarized as 1) Challenging 2) difficult 3) exhausting - a foot of snow on top of 6" slush on top of 6" of ice - 3" white and 3" black :(  again no ATV on that stuff - at least I did have fun with the dog and caught 3 small pickerel

At least it is encouraging that the big lake has no ice right now on the broads - just maybe it will ice WELL before it gets covered in snow - one can only hope!
