Hit the ice for the first time this season.  8+ inches, mostly snow covered.  A great day, no wind- but bitter cold at times.  No fish dang it!   Had 4 break off.  Saw 3 on the ice.  A good day over all.

Breakoffs, I hear you. I'm respooling with 6# Vanish. May be a little better than the 4# I been using. Will find out Thursday.

I have 6# Vanish and P-line for this trip, hope we get to see the strength of it, Goat.  Can't wait to see those big bows first hand and see the new digs.

i love the p-line when it comes to the 10#+ tests, but i have tried p-line 4 & 6#, and just had lots of problems with them twisting and then breaking, wearing itself thin on the rod-guides, and just being weak overall because of it's lack of stretch.  i still religiously use the 15# fluorocarbon because it is too thick and sturdy to be easliy twisted and broken down and is great on deep-water hooksets, but on my light action rods i use and have always trusted stren light blue 4#-8#.

Like many of you, got on the ice for the first time during the holidays.  The exact date was Friday December 29, 2007.  Launched the sled right off the North boat ramp going about 70 yards and then just did a right turn for about 30 yards and drilled the first hole.

The night before I tied on a pink and pearl white Berkley grub weighted with a 1/16 oz. lead head.  Baited it with a mealworm and jigged it one turn of the reel handle off the bottom then let it set while I poured some coffee.  Of course Murphy was on the lake.  While pouring the coffee the rod took a wild dip into the hole causing great excitement and consternation.  It ended up being a 21" very fat rainbow.  A half hour went by and nothing more so changed locations to about 30 yards west of the current location.  Set up the same way as before.  Started getting little bites soon after the lure was settled in the hole.  This went on for about 15 minutes so I picked up the rod and started jigging it.  WHAM!  After a long fight another rainbow trout was on the ice.  This one was only 18" but the girth was lager than the larger fish.

With my two fish limit I packed up and went home.  Can't hardly wait to get those two fish eaten so I can return for another two.

As far as the break-offs,how are you setting your drag? I loosen mine after I set the hook and adjust accordingly.Ideally I retie after each fish caught. When the fish runs you may have to free the line from the bottom of the hole as it will cut a thin groove in the ice. It's not as big a deal when they are far from the hole and running off line, but when you've got them close to the hole and if it's cutting into the ice the fish can speed off at any angle and break it off if it's light line, which is what I use.Last but not least, new line?type?
