Here is a link to a National Weather Service site, they monitor ice thickness around the state. You will need to fill in the drop down menus to see the data. Use the second table, and type 2008 in each field then select search. Lakes that are close to Fairbanks are Chena Lakes, Harding Lake, Birch Lake, and Quartz Lake. Rivers would be Chatanika, Chena, Salcha, and Tanana. Now all I need to know is where do I apply and do you get to fish while on the job!

Kevin those NOAA guys didn't drill on the river here in town where I drilled... :'(  I didn't reach with an 18" extension in some spots. :-[ :-[  I wonder where they measure the thickness, on a spring? ;D  5 ft. of ice easy in areas where I had 6 FOW underneath...  Gave up after 4 holes because the drill was dulling so fast, (silt and hardness.)  I wonder if Strikemaster makes a diamond tipped blade? ;D

I spend my summers in the Chitina/McCarthy area, anyone do any ice fishing in that area?

Yeah we already know the state has no money to have someone drill a couple of holes around the area to let people know and NOAA measures on local lakes but I don't think they go too far out of town except for like the Chatanika.

Got Ice?

I haven't really heard of many people fishing that area in the winter as much as they do in the Glennallen area. I haven't had to put the big extension on yet but after this cold snap of -40 during the day and close to -50 at night will cause mother nature to be making some thicker ice. The ice could be close to 4 feet thick by the time the temp warms up.

LOL!  I think with that much ice I might consider giving up ice fishing!  Never!
You guys are hardcore anglers for sticking with it!

Tight lines..

GOT ICE- There is some sweet ice fishing in the chitna/ Mcarthy area. I have yet to find a lake there that is bad. Some are really good. Look at ADF&G website, look for stocked lakes, those are your best bet for high numbers.
