What do ya think good or no good?
« on: Nov 28, 2007, 04:55 PM »
I just got offered a new yamaha 40hp on a 17 foot boston whaler for a really cheap price but it has not been winterized, can the engine freeze and crack, the boat is down by Boston and it has not been to cold down there. What do you guys think.....can a few cold nights un winterized mess up the engine?

I am guessing you will be alright. It takes a pretty good freeze to bust up an engine.

Do you have to buy it with out testing it? As with any used purchase you should have a mechanic go over it to be sure it is not pooched.

Good Luck!

as long as the outboard motor is all the way down , gravity will drain it and there shouldnt be any water in it. if you have a bad seal and have water in the lower unit oil that could reeze and cause damage...change that lower unit oil asap and youll be fine

I use to go urchin fishing all winter with a mercury outboard and some days it would be -4. The only thing we use to look out for is if it wasn't pumping water when would first start it up. I don't think you would have to worry about freezing water until the end of December down in Boston. Is it in saltwater or freshwater?

Boat moter and trailer for cheap??! Nothing cheap about a boston wayler, trailer also has value, used moter
Well that depends on how much you will trust it to get you home safe? You can always buy a new moter for an old boat.  ;)

I don't know what cheap means, but a new 40 yammie on a 17 whaler with a trailer..if you have the money then i would go for it. Thos boats have some of the best re-sale value in the market, and they are a pleasure to ride on. I would wonder why so cheap though.. And people who don't winterize their stuff may neglect other things as well. When you go down to look at it, bring a compression tester with you to make sure the motor is sound.. Anything above 100-110 PSI per cyl. and within 10% of each other is a good guideline as to overall condition. Look at the leaf springs on the trailer, and date code/condition of tires  if your towing aways. Poke around for soft spots on floor or transom as well, although you stand a better chance on a whaler being sound than many others. Good luck dude. I have re-built more than a few older lunds and floors and stringers SUCK to replace.

Drain and change the lower unit oil for starters. Makes sure there's no water in there to freeze up and cause problems. I always drain the carb of gas, and remove the plugs to spray a Stabil "fogging" into the plug holes. Then i just add some gas stabalizer to the remaining fuel, and try to burn it in snowblowers, / augers/ or whatever before spring.  If you want to get crazy, you can lube everything up, and clean the grease and unburned oil off. Don't let it just sit out in the snow over the winter though..Cover it good if you can.

I would think that a 17 foot Whaler and a 40 hp would be way underpowered.  Make sure you take it for a test ride before you buy it...that way you know what you are getting...no surprises.  Whalers are sweet boats for sure but remember, if it sounds too good to be true....

Good luck.
Thanks, Dad, for taking the time to show me how to fish!!
