Mendota Rig for perch?
« on: Nov 13, 2007, 10:23 PM »
Was doing some reading up on perch fishing in some ice mags and came across mention of a Mendota rig for fishing deep water perch.  As I understand it came from Lake Mendota in WI but what does it look like/consist of?

Check out the site-Ratso's and shrimpo's-under general ice fishing chit chat. Others and I described it there.

Not trying to hijack the thread, but what do you guys consider as deep water. The deepest water that I fish for Perch here in SD is about thirty feet.
It seems to go from zero to hero all some have to do is lie.

I personally call anything over 20' deep for perch.  Dropping a 1/80th jig on 2lb test can take a while to reach bottom... I'd bank on these rigs getting ya down in a jiff....

i wouldn't consider anything under 40 feet deep for perch we have caught some slobs in 60-70 feet before, a hali is #1 for deep water drops like a rock.

Yikes  :o  I am assuming when you're fishing in 70fow you must be catching for the frypan?  I've had them puke out their air bladders from 30fow if you don't take your time reeling them up...

NEWSFLASH
.
.. most perch fisherman fish for perch to eat......

I have caught perch in 65-75 FOW in Seneca lake. It depends on the body of water. In seneca its rare to find perch in less than 15 FOW and I doubt if the bigger ones ever go shallower than 20, but I might be wrong..  most fish are caught from 20-80 FOW in seneca lake, wheras Sodus bay has a deepest pat at 45 FOW.. and the fish I have been catching have all been in 15 fow or less. I got a few little ones in 25.  Canandaigua lake most people fish from 10-15 FOW butI have gotten them in 45 as I was drifting off the ledge.

You drop the rig slower than one might think what this does one ,gets the bait to the bottem faster but most important does not twist the line like a fast droped hook ,sinker and line. If you drop this rig you will have a balldup mess at the bottem.JMO
