Got beat
« on: Mar 17, 2007, 09:23 PM »

Learned to do a little air brushing this year.
Entered my pieces at this years Prairie Canada Show, only managed a second and third place.
Judge told me, the Bass was very well done,,,, but my habitat sucked big time.

This is the little sucker that beat me this year.
Oh well,,,next year I guess.

Dude, you got ripped off. That first place winner looks like it belongs in a freakin' cartoon.I think it's a bluegill, but it could pass for a peac**k bass. For what it's worth(not much)in my opinion you slam dunked that guy.Very nice  detail and color on your fish.I wish I had the time and talent for something like that.It must be pretty satisfying.I predict your talent will take you places.Good luck.

Now that's what I call a conservative website, they blocked out the word above peacock. That's a little ridiculous

I would be very PROUD of it ! By the way , you should of asked the judge , "Is this a fish contest or a habitat contest ? " , maybe your fish cant afford that high end habitat  ;D ;D ;D
Looks good to me !! Jigger

I just got back from the carving show.  I would have to say the detail, particularly on the fins, of the pumpkinseed was better, but the colours of that fish should almost have put it in the caricature category, since that is nothing like any photos I've seen of a pumpkinseed.

Sorry guys that fish is a Pumpkinseed of the sunfish variety. I agree that your Bass is much better but that fish is not a Bluegill notice no blue around the gills. The stripes are of the Pumpkin seed variety. So if the judges said it was a bluegill you could challenge it otherwise the judges sux!

It was labelled as a pumpkinseed....

From the original photo, I thought perhaps it was the elusive orange crappie.   ::)

I hate to be a "spoil sport" but if the award was based on the entire presentation I think the one that got first place should have been the winner. There is no doubt that the bass was the better fish but the pumpkin seeds setting and structure was better. But as we learn from the past next year you should have no problem winning.

OH for sure, the fellow who did the pumpkin seed, spent a lot of time on his habitat, he made the grass out of copper, and he textured the stones.
Next year will a different story. ;D

Next year for sure do a smallie nosing down on a crayfish with its claws up partially hidden under a log or rock. Throw in some weeds and don't forget some zebra mussels for texture. That sunny looks like the sun where's the blues?

I still think the bass looks great. The pumpkinseed's habitat does look better, but is it a habitat contest or a fish carving contest? Your bass definitely looks more realistic! ;D

I would think the habitat would be easier than the carving itself. I give your sculture a big  !

Of the two fish I would say the bass looks better as a fish, the pumpkinseed definately does have a better background.  But honestly, neither fish looks real.  They look better than anything I could do, but I wouldn't display either in my home.  Keep at it, practice makes perfect, I would get some air brushing tips from a good taxidermist, you are just a good paint job away from winning, because fixing the background would be the easy part.
