Pair falls through ice on Long Pond-Belgrade
« on: Mar 22, 2007, 06:56 AM »
BELGRADE — Two people broke through the ice at the south end of Long Pond late Wednesday.

At 8:59 p.m., Kennebec County Sheriff’s deputies and emergency responders from Winthrop, Mount Vernon, Vienna and other communities responded to a report of two people in the water at Long Pond near Dunn Road.

Both were able to make their way to the shore on their own and dive teams were canceled.

A LifeFlight medical helicopter was called in to transport one of the individuals to a hospital shortly after 9:30 p.m., with at least one of the individuals being treated for hypothermia.

Two snowmobiles were reportedly in the water

Read that this morning (I get an e-mail from the Sentinel every morning with links to the headlines). There's still no ice fishing on Long Pond, right? Glad they were OK.
Adam.

Yesterday, I was fishing in the general area where they fell through.  The stream is open water - has been for 2 weeks.  I think they just didn't see it in the dark.  Be careful in that southern section if you plan on fishing it.  Make sure you know where you are going - or better yet, avoid it completely.  That lake never really freezes very well - too much running water.

I drove past the inlet last week and it had opened up, that must be opening up alot with this weather.  Anyone know?  Be nice to have enought open water to launch the kayak opening day.
