Smoking tulibees??
« on: Feb 19, 2007, 02:50 PM »
Hi,
I am hopefully heading out for a day of whitefish fishing tomorrow and the spot where I go produces a few tulibees as well. I am thinking of keeping some to smoke and was wondering if anybody here has any experience with them.
I was considering doing them cleaned and whole (minus the head) and brining overnight, but I don't have an idea as to how long or how to check them to see if they are done. My experience has always been with fillets of fish, never whole fish.
My Little Chief has been sitting dormant far too long as the temperature has been too darned cold to get any smoking done.
Thanks for any help,
Glen
PS- Posting in the whitefish section as well. Hope this is okay.

They are called cisco in many places.  Here in northern Alberta, we have commercial fishermen netting them for mink feed.  They are known to have parasites.  I personally would not eat them, no matter how they were done.

Heard of it many times but never tried it. I know many people say it is great and have done it alot. We have alot of tulipees on LOTW's and they school up alot in the winter....My flasher was marking the from 5 to 17 feet today solid!!! I was gonna take a pic but unfortunetly no camera....One of the guys i fish with took some the other day to try and smoke and if I get some I will report back to you on it. I catch and keep them for my cousin who uses them for his leech traps in the spring and summer....I kept over 50 today....They can also be just a blast to catch and release.
