For whitefish - cooked rice mixed with  live waxies.
For burbot - chopped liver (salted ,chopped minnows working very well for both)
I've spent most of my life fishing, the rest I just wasted.

Sounds like a good simple baked trout recipe ;D Just throw it in the oven or wrap in foil.

Take a can of sardines (packed in water) pop a few holes in it with a knife or screwdriver, tie a 20ft piece of 10 lb test mono to it. Tie the other end to a tent stake or branch and toss that baby in the water and watch the trout come running!  Make sure you use the water packed so you don't make an oil slick in the water. I have destroyed trout using this method.  For a set up I fish the bottom with a 4 lb mono leader, small treble hook, and Powerbait nuggets (floatin kind) with the hatchery flavored in chartruese or orange.  Just add the oil, flour and frying pan and you are all set!

line set up:

main line....1oz egg sinker.....then a small barrel swivel........4lb mono line.........small treble hook with 2 powerbait(floatin) nuggets

home made powerbait I made once and it worked ok not great. Kept the eggs from a big rainbow and mixed in fish food, the kind they use at fish farms, looks like dog food. Hucked in a couple raw eggs all in a blender. Just added flour till it was the right consistency.

Have my buddies son come out on the boat and eat Slim Jims and Honey Buns.  Let him sit for 1/2 hour in the waves and he will bring you up some chum! ;D

I make a chum out of white rice, tuna fish in oil, seafood cat food, minced garlic and corn.Try freezing chum in ice cube trays and just drop a frozen chum cube down the hole every once in awhile.

Works great for smelt and trout here in CT.

For perch and calicos I like to save my dead shiners and dice them up into small pieces for chum.

Here is a hint: when you  order Chinese take out they always give you a complimentary pint of nasty starchy white rice.I just throw these rice pints in my chest freezer and save them for use in fish chum.

I use an onion sack with a rock in it. Then dump in oatmeal, bread slices, creamed corn, soap chips (environmentaly friendly), and a few small gills crushed under foot. Every now and then raise it to the surface and drop it back down.
It even brings in catfish by the droves, under the ice!

Soap chips have historically been used in the Great Lakes and connecting waterways on trot lines for cats. The soap breaks down and leaves a trail in the current that because it is made of animal or whale or similar fats, dependent upon the brand and it draws fish. They eat the stuff. My Grandpa use to do this on Lake St. Claire a long time ago and soap was the only bait they used.
