Decoys
« on: Feb 15, 2007, 07:21 PM »
Just read an article in Woods and Water about using decoys for Lakers and Pike. Wondering if any of you guys use this technique. I may give it a whirl due to the slow fishing thus far. For me at least.

In the article I read, the guy made them himself. (sounded easy) . Not artist quality but enough to get some action close to your baits. Dont know ? jiggin with a piece of painted wood and metal fins (no hooks) sounds a bit odd though.  The guy got approached by wardens alot for having to many traps but when they saw he had no hooks on the Decoy they said it was cool. (but weird). He's done well.

Shiner,
Decoys are used to lure gamefish to the hole as preciously noted, it is also used to lure local perch to the hole.  We used it quite frequently in MI to attract perch to the hole.  It work great in clear water lakes.  It also helps to be inside a shanty where you can cut the glare to peek down into the water.  If your thinking about decoying, I would recommend it for perch.  Due to their aggresive nature, perch are naturally drawn to the action.

I say get a block of wood and carve your oun like the guy that lives down the street from me. He does it alot, I just don't see standing over a hole all day waiting for a fish to swim by when I have perfectly good tilts to do it for me and I can let the fish go free when I'm done.(((((FLAG)))))

No spearing, not legal, and I am all about C&R.  Decoys work well in keeping fish in your area.  The fish are inquisative and stick around longer for you to catch them.

i think in vt instead of spearing them they shoot them with bow and arrows from tree stands, in the spring when champlain floods.
