red yarn
« on: Jan 17, 2007, 02:03 PM »
I heard this tip of tying a small piece of red yarn on your treble hook.
I tried it and frayed the edges hoping that it would undulate around above  the bait.  I got got a few walleyes with this.  I was wandering what you guys thinks.

Anything that would increase the visibility of the bait definetly cant hurt!

I have a friend that got some tip-ups given to him and they had a pearlized button ran through the line a foot above the hook.  Ever heard of that??  Looked pretty fishy to me.

I know some people use buttons for line markers........just slide the button on the line to set your depth.

Also the red yarn does work good.

At your local craft store you can buy swavorski crystals (5 for 1.50) and they are cut like gemstones and about 1/2" long. i use 1 of these above about 12, 5inch strands of red krystal flash on the hook eye. crystals come in all colors (i like blood red) and have enough weight to sink a shinner.

I just tried a piece of 2 inch blood red (or even a tad bit brighter) yarn on all of my treble hooks, we are allowed 3 lines in WI so i put them on all of mine for a little test. I also had to take 3 extra tipups for a friend that did not have any. They were rigged exactly the same and all 6 tipups were in the same area or as close as possible. The results: I caught 9 northerns and a bass and with the red yarn tipups and the other guy had one flag and lost the fish. I am going to do the same test Thursday morning again to see if it was just a coincidence or what.

We used to do that (now we use tiny bobbers).  Works pretty well.

It also works if you use a cheapo "reel-less" jigpole.  You'll alway get back to your last depth.

Never heard of using it as a "spoon" right at the hook.  Interesting.

I've used red yarn with good success.

A little trick I came up with is to carry a BIG needle and insert a piece of yarn into the minnow through the chin so it looks like it's gills are showing.

I will try to get a pic of this up today or tomorrow.

I have heard of a smelting trick that uses red yarn,  their little teeth get trapped in it and you don't even hook them,  so I imagine bigger fish may run into the same issue of snagging a tooth in it and making it move, instead of the lite nibble they sometimes do...

our fellow pike fishermen over in England and Europe use Quick/Strike(Traces) with red plastic or red yarn next to the hooks for years

Here's the red-yarn trick I've been using for years.

Unfortunately I didn't get a pic of the small pike that I caught on that minnow (which survived and is still alive in my bucket). I did get the whole thing on video with putting the minnow on, setting the Slammer Tip-Up, then the Slammer goes off, I ice the pike and the minnow gets flung onto the ice. Then take the hook out of the corner of it's mouth and slide the hammer-handle back into the hole.  I don't have a strong or fast enough computer with video editing software to post it anywhere so you'll have to wait for it on VHS or DVD.

My digital camera doesn't have a display so the pics aren't the clearest but I think you can see enough. I hooked the minnow with one barb of a #4 treble just behind the dorsal.
