Gulp/powerbait etc?
« on: Feb 22, 2007, 06:21 PM »
I didn't go out the other day cause I couldn't get to a bait shop and wanted to fish with tip-ups. (I DO some jiging)
But afterward,I wondered about if there was much chance of I had used gulp/powerbait or similar. I know that I have used dead baits for pike and it seems to work better than live one. I think in the winter that pike mainly become scavengers of smaller fish that meet their end of old age etc and stay suspended and in the cold water hang around until either they slowly decompose or something eat them.
I'm not sure how much odor comes into play on winter fish strikes for them and other fish but has anyone tried just putting some of these on a hook and waiting?
I have seen videos of Aqua vu's on fish strikes and note how some fish seem to need some jigging to entice strikes but others seem to come up slowly and seem to inhale the bait.
Anyone every give these a try in a pinch?

I use them because we can't use live bait and a i always have problems with dead bait. They work ok. It way easier then trying to put a sucker on the hook.

I hate trying to keep bait alive and I dont use it alot so I use plastics and Gulp alot. I have done well with it alot. Today I used it for perch and walleyes and I did great...Also keeps me from having to put my hand in a minnow bucket all day ahah.

They work well, but I have found that your approach needs to be adjusted. As you mentioned, a jigging motion, some movement can be needed to trigger some fish into striking. With live bait, I still work it, but the bait does a lot of the work itself, with Gulp etc.. it is dependent upon you for movement. :)

I find they all work fairly good for perch, the ones i find the best are berkley honey worms ,yum maggots and the jars of salmon eggs also work good, but none of them beat real bait tho
Theres only 3 seasons..open water, hunting and icefishing!

The power grubs worked fine for perch and panfish but tried jigging with Gulp 4"minnow grubs for pike and pickerel and the did not perform as expected. They actually froze up and had no tail action at all. Switched to traditional soft plastics and had much better success due to swimming action.

Scientist make sure you keep gulp in an inside pocket or somewhere warm. It will freeze rocksolid like you said.
pour me another one, I'm finished with the other one

How do you use it?

I bought the rainbow variety for trout this week, and need to know how to rig it onto my jigs, and am told that it can even be used on tip-ups.  Any help?

I've tryed the jigging method and I've noticed that the BANJO MINNOW works wonders.

Try out this simple lure, and it'll look like a Minnow is injured when jigging it. I've caught many fish doing this.
