New Trout techniques for 2007
« on: Jan 28, 2007, 05:04 PM »
Well I thought the trout threads were kinda getting quite lately and I was wondering what everyone has been successful with or not so successful when fishing for trout(bows/browns/brookie) this year. I start by saying a little bit of everything this year. I have been mixing it up with Emeralds, waxies, meal worms, and trout worms all on tipups and all just under the ice. All in no more that 20 fow. Most in 3-5 fow.  8)  I also tried ice flys and forage minnows jigging or just sitting there. ironically enough everytime  that something hit the flys and forage minnow it was sitting still for a long time (no jigging)
Alright who is next ;D

Northland Tackle has been good to me this year. Their Eye Dropper work really well for brookies. Mealworms have been the ticket some days but for the most part I've been sticking to shrimp. Only in one lake this year we've caught fish that have been suspended. All other lakes they have been in the bottom 2 FOW

On my tipups I like using pinheads. The browns and the rainbows love them and I jig using a small swedish pimple with a meal worm and I do well with that

Pinheads are very small minnows.  If you want to catch smelt or yellow perch, or white perch if you got them.  I use smelt on all of my tip-ups.  Once in a while i will put on a minnow, and catch some nice yellow perch of good size, over a 1lb.   ;)

What are your thoughts on best techniques for fishing NEK water such as Caspian and Willoughby, I am headed there this weekend, have fished there before with moderate success.

Heres a completely different approach.  Last year was the first year i ever tried for trout through the ice and i was clueless, but taking the major points from those of you who've posted here i had a good idea of where they should be in any given lake...but instead of the typical live bait trout offering, i decided to use my favorite perch killing live bait...wigglers (mayfly larvae)...and i used it on my favorite perch killing rig which is a #8 red hook with a glow in the dark bead on the line and a single shot maybe 4 inches above the hook and bead

set this up off of a tip up, 2 feet down in 14 FOW over a large flat adjacent to a steep drop in Waloon lake

did i get one?  of course i did, only one, but it was a 22" Rainbow and it was awesome (i thank those of you on this board who contributed to the success)

it was funny as well, because a guy i met who fishes the lake regularly says that people fish for them, but "rarely" catch them in there (extra funny because as a kid we had a place on the lake and we caught BIG bows and browns dangling big blue shiners where the thermocline meets the bottom in the summer)

beginners luck?  i dont think so

headed up to try it again next weekend, but this time we will really focus on the trout...Crystal lake
