Personally after having been station in Minot North Dakota in the air force, I dont think you can beat any of the REAL DOD issue artic gear.  When I need cold weather stuff I hit EBAY or the surplus store and buy up all that stuff   The artic bunny pants and parka are AWESOME   stay away from micky mouse boots tho
Why don't you like mickey mouse boots ?? If there's something warmer and as waterproof please give me your opinion.

my german war pants  german army were $7.00<surplss>

& I bought  a few german  Hats  that one I was wareing  saved my life on the ICE  when I fell straight backward
& hit the back of my head on the ice    it moved  up a little bit <hat>  so my bump had a little bit of extra room

Steve

ps  I  ice fish with my suit  with  no pants on under it  some times   & still I am nice & warm

I wear the ice armor bibs, a one piece suit underneath and the artic armor jacket.  YEsterday I fished in what had to be -10 with the wind chill, gusts of 40mph and no problems.  The ice armor is def heavy duty.  THe artic armor however does NOT keep you warm unless you are wearing something heavy under it.  Boots are still an enigma to me so I dont know what to say about them except stay away from kamik are you outside boots.  THey are SUPPOSED to be waterproof which they arnt.

I am not so worried about staying warm cause most suits will do that easily. I need to stay from getting wet, from cutting holes or going from outside snow-inside heat and the snow melting and getting me wet. I havent got wet yet with the ice armour suit...Also I dont tend to sweat in the suit either which I love cause after wearing a survival suit for 3 years I was getting used to sweating while walking.

I have the Carhartt Arctic Extreme coveralls.  -10, -20, whatever, that's all I need. The only thing I don't like about the Carhartts is that there isn't an attached hood. I bought a snap-on hood, but it isn't the same as one built in to the suit.  Even a zippered hood would be better than the snap-on.I thought about the Cabelas Trans Alaska Extreme, but found the Carhartts for 100 bucks. I don't like the fact that if you buy the Ice Armor, you have to get the whole set, not the jacket or the bibs. What's up with that?  What if you have the set and something happens to the bibs or jacket? Do you have to buy the whole set over again?

I took my blue suit back to Cabela's blew the zipper on the  bibs blew the 2nd time I wore them.  Even with the zipper blown I never got cold.  I want to replace the blue with the gray suit but Cabela's are out of my size. I kneel on the ice a lot and the padding kept my knees warm and dry.

These are all great posts.  I was thinking of getting a new suit, now to deciede which one.  I do like the idea of floatation with the IDI  just wonder how water proof they are if you fall in.  The Mustang ones also look great and for late Ice the Commandor 9001 Immersion looks the best but is $615.  I have always been reluctant to go out on late ice when fishing is hot around here after falling in once with regular clothes, might have to rethink late ice!  Thanks for the ideas

Not to change the subject, but I haven't had much sleep lately and the mind is playing tricks on me.

When reading through the list of topics to see which ones had interest for me, I thought this one said "ICE FISHING SL*T, WHATS BEST IN THE COLD?"  :o :o :o :o :woot: :woot: :woot: :woot:

I was highly disappointed when I re-read the topic carefully. :'( :'( :-\ :-\

If you fish the late ice on the great lakes and wind up getting stuck on a ice drift and needing to get rescued by the coast guard, the mustangs are the best.  When I was in the Navy these were standard issue when we went topside in the Gulf of AK.  The great thing about these is they have both an auto inflator and a manual inflator.  That way the orange suits shine like becons when the USCG (puddle pirates, canadian navy) has to fish out your azzzz out of the water or off of ice that you shouldn't have been out on anyway.  It also helps maintain your survival so they can collect the fees you'll be charged...lol

But actually they are excellent suits, I have no idea of the price...mine was paid for by, well, all of you good tax payers

I just bought a new carhartt with attached hood. It's not the coveralls, but it's the warmest thing I've ever worn! It does pretty well when wet, so long as it doesen't get completely soaked.

I had to use a Mustang suit for work, and have since taken it on a long-term lease :) for the purposes of ice fishing.  It is water and wind proof (had buddies shivering in shanties), and has the full security of floatation in case you fall through.  The suit I have has a manually inflatable "pillow" behind the hood to keep your head above water should you feel like you're going to pass out from hypothermia. Also has reflective bands all around should the USCG or Canadian Coast Guard need to pull you from the water at night.  It also has velcro bands to tighten at numerous points to minimize water entry into the suit should you take an unexpected dip.  The model I have retails around 350-400.  I've had it for four years now and have used it extensively - with no defects in materials (unless you count a minor gash in the calf caused by an aloof auger blade.........

When this one wears out I will gladly buy a new one. As far as sweating in the thing - it is a major issue as the suit is not vented.  I put it on once I get to where I'm fishing and drill some holes, and sometimes take it off for the walk back in.  Can't complain, I could wear shorts in the thing at 15F temps.

Went through the ice the other day up to my chest while fishing Erie. Had on my Stearns hypothermia I-580 Worksuit(float suit). Did not get nervous as I could feel the buoyancy of the suit was keeping me a float.  Only had some wet feet as the water went over the top of my boots. The others in my group were in amazement as I simply climbed up to safe ice and walked over to them and started fishing. Never got cold with the exception of my wet feet. Was fishing out of an airboat so I changed into some dry socks. In my opinion you can't beat the hypothermia suits for warmth and safety. If anything you will get too hot! Cold is not a factor.

True, I prefer tank top and cut offs, unless it's below 20 and the wind chill get's down to 0.  Sandals are a nice touch, especially the golf ones with spikes to hold the ice.

I bought the same suit last year. I really bought it for floatation but it turns out to be the warmest piece of clothing I own. I only wear underarmours underneath. Thats it. The only reason I wear them is to keep the suits material from touching my skin. Sure makes you feel more at ease knowing you are safer.

I vote for the I.D.I. gear.  Exactly like the smurf suits, but with insulation and floatation.  Very light and extremely warm.  I think if they made a blue model they would corner the market.  The red color was initially a turn-off for me, but I actually like it now.  Get 10 guys together with smurf suits and you can't tell them apart from 50 yards.

Besides the color, why would anyone choose the smurf suits?
