Personally after having been station in Minot North Dakota in the air force, I dont think you can beat any of the REAL DOD issue artic gear. When I need cold weather stuff I hit EBAY or the surplus store and buy up all that stuff The artic bunny pants and parka are AWESOME stay away from micky mouse boots tho
ICE ARMOR blue suit, the best their is.I wore it in -18 weather with 20 mile winds and never got cold. You got to layer,i wear an expedition union suit with a pair of sweats and a turtleneck and a fleece liner coat. You can kneel in 4" of water and you will never get wet.And it's less bulky then those other coats.
Vexilar Suit. 'nuff said ...
Lobes where did you get your Vex suit,I haven't seen one yet. Reeds Sports has them on sale! reedssports.com
Not to change the subject, but I haven't had much sleep lately and the mind is playing tricks on me.When reading through the list of topics to see which ones had interest for me, I thought this one said "ICE FISHING SL*T, WHATS BEST IN THE COLD?" I was highly disappointed when I re-read the topic carefully.
These are all great posts. I was thinking of getting a new suit, now to deciede which one. I do like the idea of floatation with the IDI just wonder how water proof they are if you fall in. The Mustang ones also look great and for late Ice the Commandor 9001 Immersion looks the best but is $615. I have always been reluctant to go out on late ice when fishing is hot around here after falling in once with regular clothes, might have to rethink late ice! Thanks for the ideas
I have the Carhartt Arctic Extreme coveralls. -10, -20, whatever, that's all I need. The only thing I don't like about the Carhartts is that there isn't an attached hood. I bought a snap-on hood, but it isn't the same as one built in to the suit. Even a zippered hood would be better than the snap-on.I thought about the Cabelas Trans Alaska Extreme, but found the Carhartts for 100 bucks. I don't like the fact that if you buy the Ice Armor, you have to get the whole set, not the jacket or the bibs. What's up with that? What if you have the set and something happens to the bibs or jacket? Do you have to buy the whole set over again?
I had to use a Mustang suit for work, and have since taken it on a long-term lease for the purposes of ice fishing. It is water and wind proof (had buddies shivering in shanties), and has the full security of floatation in case you fall through. The suit I have has a manually inflatable "pillow" behind the hood to keep your head above water should you feel like you're going to pass out from hypothermia. Also has reflective bands all around should the USCG or Canadian Coast Guard need to pull you from the water at night. It also has velcro bands to tighten at numerous points to minimize water entry into the suit should you take an unexpected dip. The model I have retails around 350-400. I've had it for four years now and have used it extensively - with no defects in materials (unless you count a minor gash in the calf caused by an aloof auger blade.........When this one wears out I will gladly buy a new one. As far as sweating in the thing - it is a major issue as the suit is not vented. I put it on once I get to where I'm fishing and drill some holes, and sometimes take it off for the walk back in. Can't complain, I could wear shorts in the thing at 15F temps.
