Augers !!!
« on: Jan 16, 2007, 06:19 PM »
Fellas I have a strike master 8" auger and my buddy has the same auger in the 6" model. I can cut through the ice with his like the ice is butter. With my 8" it is hard to get the hole started and when I get through the ice it leaves a sharp edge around the bottom of the whole. I blades surley are not dull because the auger has probably drilled a total of 5 holes since I had it out of the box, because I got it last year for christmas and we did not have good ice and this year we have had no ice. Can anyone give me any info.   CC

A buddy had kind of the same problem with his cutting hard...turned out his had a broken weld at the bottom that allowed a blade to not have the correct angle...I woudl check to make sure nothing is loose or broke..

The bigger the hole the harder the auger will be to turn, but your auger sounds like something is wrong with it.

I agree with the rest. Check the auger, if it's ok then check the blades. They may be sharp but I had a set one time that I thought I could shave with and it still would be hard to drill a hole. I put new blades on and man what a difference.

I also have a 6 and 8 inch Augers,my 6 always drills faster than my 8.I might be off base,I believe its
like using a drill bit, the smaller the drill bit the faster it will drill ?????? Hopefully this makes sense ????
Generally I use my 8 in for for tip ups and my 6 in for panfish.I like the 6 for panfish cause its faster
and helps make me more mobile.I am hoping we all get to use are augers VERY soon.
Just got the weather forecast from Tom Skilling Chicago, the cold will continue !!!!!!!!!!  Yes!!!!!

Are these the mora (blue) or the lazer (black)? The mora augers are harder to cut with than the lazers. Not only do the lazers cut better the blades last a lot longer.

Just a hint,if purchasing a new Auger spend the extra few bucks and get a Lazer, you wont regret it

As others have said it is much easier to cut through ice the smaller the auger is.  You may think it's only an extra two inches, what's the big difference.  However, you are cutting away nearly twice as much ice by using the 8 inch auger than if you were using a 6 inch auger.

Fellas I went ahead and broke down and bought a lazer (black) in the six inch model. Now all we need is good ice. Hopefully now that most ponds are locked up the wind will pick up and blow the snow off of the ice.   Jig On !!!
