Emerald Shiners
« on: Jan 14, 2007, 07:31 PM »
Ok, I have read several posts on VHS but still am a little confused Having said that, it certainly sounded like emerald shiners were not going to be available, unless they were certified disease free. My question is, are there any bait shops in the Albany/Saratoge/Lake George area that are selling emeralds ??? my last check with the WW they didn't have them :(

from NYSDEC website:

The limit of 100 bait fish will reduce the risk that bait fish will be collected in one water but used in a different water. The personal possession limit is 100 bait fish regardless of whether they were collected personally or purchased from a bait store. This regulation pertains to live bait fish and dead bait fish, including salted minnows and frozen bait. The personal possession limit of 100 bait fish will also make a clear distinction for law enforcement to distinguish between personal and commercial collection of bait fish.

I took this picture last night. The last thing I remember was my arms were falling off and my back hurt. I think I have enough to test, but wait, 3 weeks to wait now !? I might better throw a party for you guys with the $1,040.00.

I think if this works out, I'll go to one of your ice gatherings and donate the bait. How's that sound ?

Where did you get them??? The 1040$ is the cost for you to test them for this virus???So do they test every minnow??? or just randomly pick one out of the million you have in your tank??? Thanks

These were cought in legal waters in Oneida lake. The picture shown is as I saw them "emerge" from nowheres at dusk. I hold them in cages in a marina right at the lake. As I understand it : A sample of 60 minnows are now to be shipped either dead or alive ( depending on wich facility), then the lab tests them by disecting the internal organs out, then mix a special protien derived from fathead minnows. These samples then are looked at periodiclly to see if any viruses emerge. This goes on for three or four weeks, depending on the facility's procedures. Bacterial testing is also done, along with a visual for a parasite. If all goes well, I get certification. If I decide to get more in the spring, I then have to have them tested too.

There is paperwork involved and a chain of custody paperwork and believe me, if I cheat and get cought, I'll probably go to jail. So there is no fooling around or trying to cheat.

VHS spreads by urine and other body fluids excreeded then it enters a uninfected fish through the gills. I checked a tank that had minnows fro the beginning of November. There were no dead or ill looking ones, so I think i'm good.

Well i can always count on you to answer and answer quickly and i apprieciate it  Now if the 60 out of the million come back as infected and the minnows are kept in the lake in cages at the marina then what,? you have to release the whole infected million back into oneida lake and net another million from some where else? or do the million get taken out and killed? and what if the 60 you sent in didnt have the virus and the other 999,640 do!!!!! things just dont make sense to me, and i am sure i will ask you another 20 questions or so

I hate to sound like a smart ass, but you know what they say about bridges....

 If they are infected :
I would imagine that I would have to contact DEC. At that point, everything changes. I would never release them back into the water to swim freely, the state would have to come and re-test, i'm sure. The state then deem Oneida lake infected, the state hatchery then would have to close until further notice, And although I lost money, I would be pretty proud of myself for doing the right thing. Peanut butter and crackers aren't all that bad for dinner, afterall.

If the rest are infected and the 60 were deemed safe:

The odds are against that, and besides, I know the clinical signs--- Red bulging eyes, bleeding from the fins, red dots seen on the gills.  I would alert the DEC of such occurance.

I see the odds the other way if you only send in 60 little minnows out of the million (probably more than a million) you have in that cage at the marina. the odds are your going to miss the virus in maybe 2 minnows  in the other 999 thousand you dont send in.

I just did a calculation. There's only a half million. Either way, the precaution is being made, plus the state has deemed oneida lake safe so far.

So meanwhile, out in buffalo there is fishermen that ARE dipping emeralds that ARE infected. This practice is legal, and its up to the individual to use them in the same water.

That as you know has been going on for years and years while this virus has been around. So isnt it to late???How can oneida be safe? we have fished oneida for walleye tons of times and brought emeralds from lake erie .That was last year and i know there are thousands of guys that have done the same thing over the years. In my opinion if it is going to work then" NOONE" should be able to dip minnows from "ANYWHERE" especially bait dealers, because the odds are that if your going to only test 60 minnows out of 500,000 your going to eventually miss the virus.I think if it truely is going to be stopped that is the only answer.

I really appreciate your views. This is the kind of posts I expected weeks ago. We ALL need to voice our opinions. Did you go to the DEC site and send in your opinion as what to do ?

By disallowing baifish distribution and not addressing other human intervention spreading this and other problems is futile, as there is many other means of transport of them ( the invasive species and pathogens brought in by ships).  Our own live wells and unknowing boaters can spread it just as easy.We need to look at where the virus is right now and prevent it spreading.

In a way, I do agree with you, stopping baifish distribution alltogether. However, this particular pathogen is not very selective and if one minnow is bad, then chances are, the rest will be. You can see the reason in the wild and even in captivity, these minnows are in very close proximaty to each other.
