Pike Growth???
« on: Feb 17, 2007, 09:57 AM »
Does anyone know what the "average" yearly growth rate is for Pike?  I know there are many determinate factors, but on average what is the age of a 10lb, 20lb, or 30lb Pike?

This is just a guideline they use in my province.

A ten year old pike in the more Southern part of my province is around 15 lbs. Most of these lakes have warm waters.

A ten year old pike in the Central area of my province is around 9 lbs. The lakes in this are are usually getting a bit deeper and cooler.

A ten year old pike in the far North is 4 lbs, these lakes are usually deep and cold all year long.

It seems that the average temperature of the lake through out the year and the availability of nutritious food are two large factors in determining a pike's size.

So do any of these lakes freeze over in winter?

Freeze over?  I'm sure they have close to 3' of ice most winters.

So how could the lakes be deemed "Warm Water" if they freeze over?  Does it mean they reflect the ambient air temperature or fluctuations there in?

pike will grow quicker in warm water enviroments but they will also burnout quicker (not live as long) than their cold water or European cousins! anyplace you can fish for pike in water that is warm but has cool deep water sanctuaries that have trout in them that is a place to consentrate on for 20+ lb. fish!   d. b. d.      :ti pup:

I saw a chart that said a 40" pike is right around 20 years old.  It uses length as the determining factor in order to eliminate the fluctuations in weight depending on how fertile the water body is.  I believe that anything larger than this is a product of its environment and its genes not its age.  So if you catch a 48" fish that weighs 30 lbs I think that it's still around 20 or so years old it just had better genes and a better environment to live in so it grew larger.  That is why some lakes are better for trophy pike than others the pike in trophy lakes get larger faster.
